Evangelicals Are Not the Boogeyman

I realize that as an evangelical Christian I have a dog in this fight, but I want to say a few words about evangelicals and the unfortunate effort afoot to make them the political boogeyman.

There are so many misconceptions about "evangelicals" - from the definition of the word to the intentions of the people themselves - but the most damaging myth is that we evangelicals seek a theocracy for the United States of America, which couldn't be further from the truth. I'll get back to that, but first a little background.

Recently I've had several people ask me what the deal is with Ted Cruz and "the evangelicals." The people inquiring are Christians, some even evangelicals. They ask, "What exactly is an evangelical, anyway?"

In our culture, the term is used rather loosely - and, more often than I'd like, pejoratively. I'm seeing columns, blog posts and tweets galore suggesting in hushed terms that Ted Cruz adheres to some fringe philosophy that Christians must take over the world. It's not enough to accuse them of advocating a theocracy limited merely to the United States. No, world domination is their aim. This fear-mongering propaganda needs to be addressed and discredited. ...

Most of America's Founding Fathers were strong practicing Christians, who believed that man was created in G0D's image and likeness, which means that man has intrinsic worth and dignity. It is that firm conviction that leads to the notion that man is endowed with inalienable rights - that he has G0D-given liberties. The Biblical affirmation of man's inherent worth, then, is indispensable to the unique political liberty Americans have historically enjoyed.

IF Cruz is Jesus sent, why did Jesus stay out of NH. I get tired of people treating Jesus as their personal possession.

I always thought having an evangelical as President would be fine even though I am a Catholic, but Cruz is not the right evangelical. His sermons are so out of touch......saying he was hand chosen by God. Really? Cruz is a snake oil salesman. He would be perfect as head of a megachurch. I bet it would be pretty crowded. I would think he would be happy to do it. Probably make more money too. He picked the wrong career. I hope we help him lead him to his natural career as a pastor. Hopefully 2018 will guide him in the right way.

I don’t think there is an “effort”, I think some Christians are doing it themselves. All evangelicals do not think alike and they especially do not act alike.

As a Christian, I’m not voting for someone just because you tell me to vote for them because you are a Christian.

When the term ‘evangelical’ is used by political types, it does not have a defined meaning. It’s usually based on those who self-identify as ‘evangelical’ when polled. Sometimes it’s based on members of certain denominations, whether they self-identify that way or not.

It might be interesting, but it is in no way conclusive.

Have you checked out Ted's dad's religion... dominion theology? God is in control and some reason he allowed US to be rule over by a pharaoh. Cruz is NOT Moses leading US to the promise land.

On the other hand the muslims are openly advocating for their theocracy in our nation. And few dare to take them to task over it for fear of extreme violence.

I would pick Santorum if I had my ultimate choice. But so many here bashed the heck out of him in 2012 and wanted Romney instead. Well how did that work out for everyone. I was disappointed but it is life.

Now I see Cruz who I admired in the Senate, but his campaign has been a complete dishonest “win at all cost” disaster. It is a shame but there it is.

So I will stick with Trump who at least will stop apologizing for being an American if nothing else.

Cruz fits that profile right down to the doctrine of rapture... How can I believe in somebody who expects to get a free ride out of here before the really bad stuff happens.
