Disease scares never worry about the facts, the important part is the panic.
With its mild climate, Florida is susceptible to mosquito-borne diseases. Over the years, the state has experienced sporadic outbreaks of dengue and chikungunya - other tropical diseases carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is prevalent in Florida. kplu.org
While it is entirely possible that the virus is not the cause (of microcephaly) or only part of it, to avoid having yet another STD with unpredictable results on a heretofore unexposed population just might be a good thing.
In such matters, erring on the side of caution is seldom regrettable.
Of course it takes an Israeli doctor to bring sanity to this discussion
Honestly, I have seen NO PHYSICAL EVIDENCE connecting Zika to microcephaly. May I have a link to the study?
I have seen where the Zika virus is found in utero but not a good controlled study to see if there is ACTUAL CORRELATION let alone cause of Zika to microcephaly.
It’s like saying “we tested moms pregnant with microcephalic babies and 85% of them Tested positive for caffeine. Thus coffee causes microcephaly.” That isn’t much as far as science is concerned.
Please keep us informed!

Also implicated are toxoplasmosis (extremely common, and you catch it from cat litter), cigarette smoke (including 2nd-hand smoke), X-rays (not just medical, but countless other minor sources like TVs, smoke detectors, and airplane trips), lead and mercury (various sources, including heavy-metal contaminated water, and fish: yes, fish, the brain food!)...
My purpose here is not to pooh-pooh teratogen exposure or say "don't worry, because it can't be avoided." My purpose is to make a plea that all these things be put in their proper context and weighed in terms of competing risks.
Zero-toleration of risks is just flat-out impossible. Having E. coli in your gut, Staph and Strep in your nose --- which we all have --- is a risk. But we need to have some careful comparisons about what, when, where, how much, what's worth calling a "crisis," and what are the alternatives.
Look, as I have said repeatedly, this is a new and rapidly evolving event. Like the "bodies stacked like cordwood" in Mexican villages with H1N1, a lot of things people "know" will turn out to be false.
But, we have to act to protect women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant and who have travel plans based on incomplete knowledge. The papers referenced in the link above have changed me from agnostic to pretty sure about the microcephaly story, YMMV as always.
They were apparently giving pregnant women untested vaccines (expermental), while they are pregnant this year in Brazil!
Certainly DDT should be spread now. With thousands of infants being born with shrunken heads, practicing birth control until they end the threat would only be prudent.
Thank you. Good things to keep in mind.
It’s leftist public health organizations that are promoting abortion to currently pregnant women in South America. Is Gates funding them? A vaccine may follow-but who is financing the development of the vaccine? Bill Gates was quoted as saying we need vaccines to reduce the population. What if it really is a grand depopulation effort? Abort thousands of babies now then give a vaccine that, unknown to the women, reduces fertility.
At this point, given the known beliefs of the elite regarding the supposed over population, I’d believe that they are capitalizing on the recent introduction of this virus into South America.
By “in the name of compassion” I was being sarcastic. The socialist elite call evil good and bitter sweet-woe to them indeed.
Your theory makes sense. Two of my daughters (oddly, the two who look alike) had bad reactions to the dtap vaccine. All the kids are now behind on vaccinations.
A poisoned batch causing severe birth defects is entirely plausible.
“They were apparently giving pregnant women untested vaccines (expermental), while they are pregnant this year in Brazil!”
Figures. Free drug trials without the costs or liability of a study. I guess Rhesus monkeys are too expensive nowadays.
We waited until my daughter was 4 1/2 before vaccinating her (mom stayed at home). Worked great!
It’s a numbers game. There’s the risk of vaccine-correlating injuries and deaths vs. the risk of typhus, cholera, measles, mumps, diphtheria, etc. and their infection/death rates. The first is epidemic whereas the latter is practically non-existent.
So because the Zika virus was found in a fetus with microcephaly = the root cause? Did you read the article? The outbreak of microcephalic babies is limited to a northern state in Brazil. It stops at the border. No reported cases over the border. So the mosquitoes respect national borders?
We live in area that has recently seen a huge influx in immigrants from third world countries. Those diseases didn’t seem likely until now.
Mosquitoes capable of carrying Zika can and do live in the US.
Zika seems to be a fairly mild, self-limiting disease. There is no definitive evidence to link it to microcephaly. Other sequelae of Zika (like Guillain-Barré syndrome) happen as a result of several infections, and are not specific to Zika.
