Halperin Scoffs at Scarborough Suggestion It's 2nd-in-South Carolina or Drop Out for Rubio
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Talk about setting someone up to fail . . . Heading into a contest, politicians traditionally like to lower expectations. But Joe Scarborough has raised expectations for Marco Rubio almost to the roof. On today's Morning Joe, Scarborough repeatedly cited talk that if Marco Rubio doesn't finish second in the South Carolina primary, "he has to get out of the race."

Chuckling through Joe's comments, Mark Halperin batted away talk of a less-than-second-place finish forcing Rubio out of the race: "with all due respect, that's one of the silliest things I've heard this cycle. Rubio needs to beat Bush here and that's it." Halperin added that should Rubio finish second [behind Trump], "it's a big problem for Ted Cruz."

Scarborough suggests Rubio has to drop out of race if he doesn’t finish second in South Carolina. Halperin laughs him off.

Ping to Liberal Media Criticism list.

Of course, Halperin is a Lefty...he wants a split conservative vote as long as possible!

If he doesnwin he should get out...the hell with coming in second. Marco has the endorsements of nearly the entire SC GOP establishment and he’s been working to win SC for over two years!

So, would that elevate crazy John Kasich to the GrOP-e candidate?

If both Bush and Rubio drop out that would leave only Kasich and maybe Cruz as somewhat establishment candidates.

Or does the GrOP-e fall to Carson thinking he s controllable?

Stay Rubes, stay. We WANT you on that wall, we NEED you on that wall.

The longer the GOPe stays fractured, the more likely the Trump nomination. I do think eventually Trump will acquire over 50%, but it’s gonna take pulling a few more teeth.

Whatever Halperin’s politics or preferences, he’s simply saying that if Rubio finishes third, ahead of Jeb and Kasich, he’s not going to drop out. Do you think it’s likely that in such scenario he would?

What about Bush, Kasich, Carson? Who is going to get their voters? I say, Rubio will, so they think he should drop before these last three? Ha!

Rubio will be the nominee...trump has alienated the voters of Cruz and bush. Rubio is more conservative than trump.

Anything is possible...could depend on the numbers...I think Scarborough was pointing out that the expectations for Rubio to at least finish 2nd now are sky high after the Hayley endorsement...Rubio also has Tim Scott in his corner...so, 3rd or lower in SC would be viewed as a poor showing and suggest that his campaign has no traction! It will be interesting to see the results!

Fair enough.

I just want to win, and for all his flaws, I believe Rubio has a better chance of beating the Dem candidate than Cruz.

Wrong, the longer Rubio and all the rest of the hombres stay means a bigger chance of a brokered convention and that is when donnie, ted, kasich, bush and carson get the boot. The party will run the show and either Rubio gets the nod or they bring in somebody else.

The main reason I intend to vote for Trump tomorrow.

After Jeb! goes cryin' home to mama, Marco will have the full support of the RNC...which has the full support of the DNC.

What do you want to “win”? Amnesty? TPP? We’re not going to win anything if Rubio is in the WH. He’ll follow K Street’s agenda and Main Street will be SOL.

If I’m convinced that in the general election Rubio would have a good shot at winning, and Cruz would almost surely lose, can you blame me for preferring Rubio to Hillary in the White House?

Joe lost me on this one. Why in heck would Rubio drop out for finishing 3rd in SC? When Bush gets out, Rubio is going to pick up virtually all of Bush voters. Rubio is going to be the GOPe candidate, and there is zero possibility they are going to throw in the towel this early.

I agree. I think it is much more possible that Yeb will bail. He has so many more interesting things he would rather be doing... oh, and he is not getting many votes... and oh, yeah, he is out of money.

Rubio can never get the history & facts of the Gang of Eight to disappear.

I will NEVER vote for him. Too many illegals here now-—and I am positive it is FAR more than 11 million. Closer to 50 million by my calculations.

I’m not sure. Certainly that isn’t the case of The Donald keeps amassing delegates. For ex., if he wins SC (if I have this right) it’s winner take all plus a delegate from each county he wins? So, in theory, one guy can walk away with a lot of delegates.
