Posting one of the numerous articles on this free trip is not “low life”. I always liked Scalia, but am very disappointed that he would take a free trip from someone who owned the company that came up before the court or anyone that has a political agenda.

Don’t read the article if you don’t like it. The same thing happened in 2003. I am surprised that the justices don’t have to abide by rules of appearances of impropriety. Who watched the Supreme Court Justices? This is not right that only the Justice gets to decide what is or isn’t acceptable. So if Kagag or Sotomeyer or Roberts decide to take free trips (or more), I guess you are okay with it.

I think we should have better safeguards in place for the Justices too,

Poindester also said he had only met Scalia one time before. I am really wondering why Poindexter hosted more than 3 dozen people for free, and does he often do that.

“...but its still the appearance of impropriety.”

I was at a convention and after dinner at the hotel bar offered to buy a round of drinks for the few guys I was with. One guy was with the EPA or something and said he couldn’t accept and paid his own way.

“Get the facts before you condemn.”

I’m not condemning him, I was quite surprised that he had taken such a trip. I remembered the one he took with Cheney and the uproar that caused. He can afford his own trips and shouldn’t be beholding to anyone.

As far as the facts, they are keeping them from us. I want to know who the other 35 people are who were also gifted with this trip.

When the news first broke about Scalia, I was very upset, then we find out he died in a resort, then we find out he had dismissed his marshals, then we find out no one actually went to see the body to declare it natural causes, then we find out there will be no autopsy, then we find out they didn’t fly him out, then we find out the trip was a freebie for a sitting US Supreme Court Justice.

I don’t care if he is conservative or liberal, I want to know what happened. He doesn’t get a pass with me because he was my second favorite judge after Thomas.

I guess the laws are for the little guys.

I’ve been in many business classes that hammered the point of not taking gifts. It never really came up with my job, but the classes were given to everyone.

“And why hasn’t the media talked to the other guests?”

That’s an oddity that jumped out at me also. 35 guests—plus hotel employees— and nobody wants 15 minutes of fame? Seems like at least one or two would want to say something. “I saw him / sat near him at dinner /my room was in proximity to his / I did or did not hear anything unusual/ he seemed fine/ or he seemed ill.”

The body was discovered 11am. The news broke in the afternoon, and “natural causes” had been decided already, by about 1:30 pm, IIRC.
The body wasn’t moved until late that night, probably to give wife and 9 children time to make arrangements.
But while the body remained at the resort, weren’t the guests also kept there by authorities? (Unclear.)
Surely every guest was questioned by LEOs whether they’d seen/heard anything unusual? But how could 35 guests have been questioned in the approx. 2 hours before the “no foul play/natural causes” decision?
Or did questioning continue after the official statement?
Or was nobody questioned at all?
So far, we are led to believe NO investigation was conducted because none was needed, as determined by a cursory glimpse at the body—with hands neatly folded—!

In any event, no blabbing by any guest suggests either
1.) all guests were rich VIPs who are accustomed to avoiding the press for their own security reasons, or
2.) all guests have been instructed by LEOs not to make any statements.

My guess is both. And whether a professional assassin was among the people at that hotel is a question that isn’t likely to go away.

Poindexter’s statement about folded hands and unwrinkled bed clothes is what we have.
Photos probably were taken at the scene. Not likely to be made public, in deference to the family. And I can understand that. Especially if LEOs truly believed COD was natural, there’d be no reason to broadcast pics of a man in pj’s, in bed, regardless whether he’s a SCOTUS or Joe Schmoe.

But why a closed coffin? Is that protocol? IDK.

I was surprised that Justice Ginsberg was his closest confidante.

Why?

Since anything you told her would be totally forgotten within 10 minutes, your secrets would always be safe with her!

Well, first, we will never know since his body has been cremated. Second, it is not your business who the other 35 people are. The invitee is a private person on a private hunting trip and the owner or the others don't have to disclose who they are. It is really that simple.

You may not like it, but that is the way it is. I sympathize with you and I have one eyebrow lifted, but I think I am a bit more jaded than you. We are only told what they want to tell us and that is it.

However, I don't think Scalia was compromised in any way. His rulings were consistent. He did not flip and flop all over the place like Kennedy, so the whole thing does not bother me as much as it does you.

The plot thickens...

It was Poindexter who reportedly was among those who initially discovered the Justice’s body, and who then coordinated with local officials to have Justice Scalia declared dead via a phone conversation with the area medical examiner – but without an actual medical examination of the body.

well, so far imo you have no proof whatsoever he was at the ranch at all, that he ate there or went to bed there, or died there.
Too bad the body has been cremated. You don’t even know for sure who was in the coffin.

Only Poindexter knows. The other 40 or so guests (if there were any) are not talking.

In case anyone is wondering, Mr. John B. Poindexter, Scalia's host, and Admiral John M. Poindexter, of Total Information Awareness fame, - are distinct individuals.

Scalia was embalmed. Devout Catholics don’t go for cremation.

Who are you to say it is not his business? Of course the parties don't have so tell the public a thing. OTOH, neither should it be considered off limits to inquiry by members of the press or public.

You may not like it, but that is the way it is. I sympathize with you and I have one eyebrow lifted, but I think I am a bit more jaded than you. We are only told what they want to tell us and that is it.

What objection do you have to someone who doesn't accept the official story at face value looking into it a little deeper?
