Donald Trump: Don't hand federal lands to states
CBS News ^ | January 23, 2016 | Reena Flores

Posted on 02/22/2016 10:25:45 AM PST by magellan

Real estate mogul Donald Trump would not let states take control of federal lands, the Republican presidential candidate said in a recent interview.

"I don't like the idea because I want to keep the lands great, and you don't know what the state is going to do," Trump said during a talk with Field & Stream magazine earlier this week.

The trade publication, sitting down with Trump at Las Vegas' Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show, had asked about the issue of turning over federally controlled lands to individual states -- an idea previously floated by rival 2016 contender and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and supported by staunch states-rights activists.

The proposal has also received more attention in light of recent actions by radical conservatives like Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and his son Ammon Bundy, who led an armed group earlier this month in occupying a national wildlife refuge in Oregon to protest federal land use policies.

Trump cautioned, however, that states would be unpredictable in maintaining the designated lands.

"I mean, are they going to sell if they get into a little bit of trouble?" Trump asked. "I don't think it's something that should be sold."

He added: "We have to be great stewards of this land. This is magnificent land. And we have to be great stewards of this land."

The billionaire businessman suggested later in the interview that while he was a fan of oil and gas companies drilling and fracking on federal lands, protecting the earth should still be a top priority.

"I'm very much into energy, and I'm very much into fracking and drilling, and we never want to be hostage again to OPEC and go back to where we were. And right now, we're at a very interesting point because right now there's so much energy," Trump said. "And maybe that's an advantage and maybe--actually, it's more of an advantage in terms of your question because we don't have to do the kind of drilling that we did."

"I am for energy exploration, as long as we don't do anything to damage the land. And right now we don't need too much -- there's a lot of energy," he said.

While I initially was drawn to Trump a few months ago, it is clear Trump is a disaster waiting to happen. He has no clue, yet he expresses an opinion on everything and reveals himself to be a total asshat

Trump is clearly not a perfect candidate. He is also clearly not part of the establishment GOP. Which out weighs him not being perfect in my book.

Wow. You still don’t get it. You are confusing the issue. What you are addressing is not at all relevant concerning the issue of the lands of the West. The two are very different issues. You are confused and I am sorry about that. I suggest you read up on the issue and it has nothing to do with highways. Good grief.

Thank you Hostage,

I read the article. There is so much corruption in all facets of

the government. It is very difficult to see any difference in any one of them.

What the county was purposing to us land owners (mind you the deed stated we could build a house on it) We were to keep the land but couldn’t build anything on it. We could go visit our land, period. Then THEY would offer a discount on a lot in town. yeah, a discount when we OWNED our property and had the right to build.
generous don’t you think?

What happened? The PEOPLE got together and voted OUT the jerks responsible and the county back tracked.

Trump is for the PEOPLE not the government elite. I believe he will review each situation and deal with it.

I think you can say that about a number of candidates, however of the remaining 4, Trump, Cruz, Rubio, and Karsick...You cannot paste a establishment label on either Trump or Cruz...

Frankly, the label has to be earned by actions over time that comprise a history.

Since trump has never been elected to anything, we don't have a history so we go with past and current statements. We see that from that he has in the past approved of national medical care and other establishment supported policies like government powers used to force the sale of property to developers, Close relationships with liberal New York politicians and the added bonus of financial support for them and any number of issues of this kind, although he now claims different views on some of this he refuses to acknowledge he had changed his mind. So in my view it's all irrelevant and should discarded as electioneering.

Rubio has been revealed to be not so much establishment but a lying opportunist who puts on whatever uniform is required to get favorable attention. Nuff said.... Karsick, (Kasich) Is indeed a establishment RINO GOP'er who has, along with the rest of the RINO's, become a moderate and essentially a Classic liberal, politically speaking.

Cruz has a history so we go with his actions (votes, speeches, statements) over time and we find that the establishment fears him, disdains him and literally hates him. so how is it that he can be labeled...establishment?

Of the 4, there is but one Reagan Constitutional Conservative that practices what they preach and that is Ted Cruz.

Donald Trump takes on federal land control

Forget China, guns or immigration. Donald Trump is taking on a new issue: federal land ownership.

In a new op-ed for the Reno Gazette-Journal, the Republican presidential front-runner rails against the draconian rule of the Bureau of Land Management and the Obama administration land grab in the western United States.

The BLM controls over 85 percent of the land in Nevada, Trump explains. In the rural areas, those who for decades have had access to public lands for ranching, mining, logging and energy development are forced to deal with arbitrary and capricious rules that are influenced by special interests that profit from the D.C. rule-making and who fill the campaign coffers of Washington politicians.

"How much more, must this guy reveal, before people realize he is a) NOT a conservative; b) not about fixing the real problems we face; and c) part of the problems we face?????"

To the typical Trump supporter all that matters is that he:

A) Wants to "Make America Great Again" (whatever in hell that means); and
B) Hates Mexicans.

Nothing else really matters. Not limited government. Not the Constitution. Not separation of powers. That stuff's all for Faaaags. (See the movie "Idiocracy")

Hostage - My apologies. I obviously misread or somehow missed what you were trying to convey. Your response, I must say, is brilliant. I agree with you 100%.

You have summarized the issue in a manner so concise, that it could be the first page of a brief (I am not patronizing you).

While you are correct, that what matters is preserving a way of life on those lands, there are so many feds that want to return the west to nothing, that I have no faith in the federal government to do the right thing, much less have good intentions.

Again, my apologies. You are correct - I am the ignorant one.

Trump supporters will see this as another brilliant statement.

No, actually, with Trump there's a lot not to like.

But what makes him worthwhile is that we'll still be around to make things better after him.

With Hillary, it's over. If you can't figure out what she'd do with the presidency after what she did with State, you're not trying.

The wordsmithing is inaccurate.

There are many lands which are controlled by federal agencies, but very, very few of them are actually federal land. Most of it is state land, which falls under federal agency control.
