Constitutional law expert Donald Trump will play host to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz at one of the real estate mogul's insistently-named Trump buildings on Friday. While the purpose of the meeting isn't clear, it will likely involve Trump dangling wads of cash from a fishing rod just over Cruz's head and reviewing his citizenship documents with an old-timey magnifying glass.
You may recall that earlier this year, Trump told ABC News that he wasn't certain whether Canadian-born Cruz was actually eligible to run for president. Asked by ABC's Jonathan Karl for some reason if Cruz could run, Trump replied, "If he was born in Canada, perhaps not." Then: "I don’t know the circumstances. I heard somebody told me he was born in Canada. That’s really his thing." Which is pretty sound analysis.

So that's one topic they'll certainly cover, Trump looking sternly at Cruz from under that shelf of orange-gray hair. Trump will probably also intimate, as he did to Karl, that he plans on running in '16, and has billions and billions of dollars to do so. This is Trump's carrot-stick combo: All of this money will go to me or to you, Cruz, so let's talk.

What does Trump get out of the meeting? Press coverage and, more importantly, to be taken seriously as a "kingmaker." If Cruz does well over the coming months, you will hear a lot about how Trump knew-him-when. What does Cruz get out of the Friday meeting? It's not entirely clear, though it cements him more firmly in the Republican fringe. (Meanwhile, Cruz's dad is fundraising for Sarah Palin.) In an interview with ABC News' Jonathan Karl last August, the hotel magnate started a second round of "birtherism" by questioning Cruz's eligibility to be president due to his Canadian birth. But Trump and Cruz have come a long way since then and seem to have become political allies over the past year.
At a Republican dinner at his Mar-a-Lago Club in February, Trump lauded the junior senator's 21-hour filibuster over Obamacare and called him a "very special guy." He also spoke favorably about Cruz at the Palm Beach County Republican Party's Lincoln Day Dinner.
"One of the reasons I like Ted Cruz so much is that he's not controversial," Trump said jokingly. On a serious note, he added: "[Cruz] shouldn't be controversial because what he is doing is right. He took a stand recently, that if he had just a little backing - and Ted and I have spoken about this - from other Republicans … he would have negotiated one hell of a deal. It might not have ended Obamacare, but you would have really gotten a big chunk out of it."
Last November, a Cruz spokeswoman even described the two men as "friends" who speak often on the phone, and said that Cruz visited Trump's offices during a trip to New York. "Mr. Trump is a friend and the senator had some down time in NYC," Cruz's aide told Politico.
Donald Trump on Sunday ramped up his attacks on fellow GOP presidential hopeful Ted Cruz on Sunday, calling the Texas senator "a nasty guy" and a "hypocrite."
"Look, the truth is, he's a nasty guy," Trump said on ABC's "This Week." "Nobody likes him. Nobody in Congress likes him. Nobody likes him anywhere once they get to know him. He's a very –- he's got an edge that's not good. You can't make deals with people like that and it's not a good thing. It's not a good thing for the country. Very nasty guy."
Whatever else it is, Cruz’s NBC eligibility is a big deal and needs to be decided by a federal court. Nobody on the Right needs a GOP candidate who is later DQ’d.
This means... SOMETHING!
Gee, it’s almost like Trump’s opinion of a person changes depending on whether that person is standing in Trump’s way.
There are none from GOPe which is the reason Ted is my guy. He fights the Washington corruption,
You can say it is because they are now rivals, or you can say it is because he knows a lot more about Ted Cruz. I always start off assuming someone is a nice guy until they prove otherwise. I used to think Ted Cruz was a nice guy also, but not so much these days. Would a nice guy let his minions continue to trash Sarah Palin? I don’t know... he doesn’t appear to have much influence over his followers if he doesn’t want it to continue. Is that an indicator that he is a true leader?
Trump will turn on anyone. Has no center, no principles, no morality.
He has cried wolf too many times, why would the general populace believe him.
Why do his supporters not understand he could turn in them at the drop of a hat.

Well, I have never thought Trump was a nice guy and that is with giving him the benefit of the doubt from the beginning.
Cruz did change in recent months....maybe he did become a nasty guy. Marco Rubio and Ben Carson seem to think so. I blame it on his poor choice of advisors. I hope Sen. Cruz can get back on track of promoting what he will do to change this Country. I believe he is a good and talented man. I would love to see a 2 person race with him and Trump. Let the best man win.
IMHO, Cruz is not eligible, and it will definitely become a suit filing issue for the democrats if he wins the nomination.
Were he an honest man, he’d seek a ruling from the Supreme Court now.
The only one who has been right about Cruz’s citizenship status is Trump, because he has said he doens’t know.
This issue will only be resolved in court - surely you and the Cruzers understant this? When have Obama, Hillary, the media, and liberals in general ever NOT tried to exploit a weakness in a conservative?
Your side might win, it’s impossible to say for sure. But surely you can also see that all it will take is one federal judge who thinks otherwise to put a black cloud over Cruz’s head and the media will spin it that he is not eligible under the very Constitution he claims to hold so dear.
Surely you can see this.
I agree. Trump has shown that he is unprincipled, from his private life to his business dealings. He would be autocratic if elected, but he would lose to the corrupt Hillary.
It shows me a lack of good-faith on Cruz’s part as far as putting America first. It feels like Cruz is putting his own political future ahead of America’s future.
I do think there is a possibility he could beat Hillary.
How unique. No one does that.
And it's also almost like getting in Trump's way is a noble act, rather than Trump's discovery of a lie or flaw in them.
Poor Trump. A striving human being in a world of perfect angels.
I hope we don’t have to find out.
