The last time they had such power was in the 1920's. Although they had some strength in parts of the South in the 1960's, since then they have mainly served as a minor nuisance and a straw man of the Left.
"Dr." David Duke, who holds a "Ph.D" from a questionable institution in Ukraine, is another straw man. After a brief stint in the Louisiana state legislature nearly thirty years ago, he went on to be a perennial candidate--sort of a Southern-fried Harold Stassen--for various offices over the next several years.
The KKK held a statewide convention in Alabama a few years back and just over fifty attended. I think there a few thousand members nationwide.
