The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has declared that he is withdrawing the majority of Russian troops from Syria, saying the intervention had largely achieved its objective.

The news, relayed to the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, personally, followed a meeting in the Kremlin with Putin’s defence and foreign ministers. He said the pullout, reducing an intervention that began at the end of September, is due to start from Tuesday.

He’s probably reached a secret agreement with Saudi Arabia, Turkey and USA.

You guys stop your senseless proxy war, give us control of the airspace, and we can all let this thing wind down, I won’t embarrass you publicly.

Isis last I saw had a total force of about 30-50k wiping them out should have not taken but a short dedicated overwhelming ruthless effort.... Something our Military is capable of, but our political leadership has not been willing to do for my lifetime.

Wonder if this means Putin suspects Turkey is about to intervene in Syria in a big way? It would make sense to get the bulk of his expeditionary forces out of harms way if they do.

[[So why does he continue to pour troops into Armenia?

No way this is correct....]]

Because in Armenia his troops are not trapped should Turkey close the Bosporus Straight.

If the area explodes , Armenia is the place to pound Turkey and keep them out of his country.

There it is. Get in, massive firepower, you’re done, get out.
We build a one billion dollar embassy, put down roots and wait to be overrun when Democrats take over.

Pooty-poot wanted to drive the jihadists into Europe, and he succeeded. He wanted to test NATO's resolve and bully Turkey, and that gave him mixed results. He wanted to come to a deal with the Saudis over oil production, and wanted Iran involved, and failed miserably. The civil war is still going on; areas temporarily cleared of rebels will fall out of regime control once again. The economy is back to the stone age. Almost five million Syrians fled the regime and/or the fighting, living now in Jordan, Turkey, and Lebanon, and in no hurry to go back. Iran used Russia's presence as a pretext to skedaddle, so no more help there (Syrian intervention was very unpopular in Iran, also among Iran's hizzie proxies from Lebanon, and the foreign nationals Iran press-ganged into serving). Worst of all, the war was very expensive, right at the time the Russians could least afford it -- one big reason Vlad the Imploder launched their overseas adventure.

Well it appears at least one world leader knows how to do war. And just as important, how to end one.

Putin shows how it is done. Bring in a massive force get the job done and leave after realistic goals are met.

Nope. This is all part of the fake ceasefire BS the Russians are pushing.

The problem as I see it is that Assad’s military capacity was weakened prior to Russia’s intervention.

The Alawite minority was having great difficulty in replacing their losses. Other able-bodied military age Alawites have fled the country for fear of being conscripted.

OTOH, the rebels (ISIS, etc) have suffered severe losses but are in a position where they can bring more people in to take the places of those they lost.

Within a year, Assad may find himself back in the same prediciament he was before Russia’s intervention.
