Before voting nay, Rep. Edith Ajello, D-Providence, said she supported the thrust of the bill, but felt as the state's director of human services does that the proposed penalties are too harsh.
First offense: a one-month reduction in benefits; second offense: a three-month reduction in benefits. Anyone caught three times would be disqualified from the direct cash assistance program for a year.

Amazing how our entitled gibsmedats feign offense that the taxpayers that foot their every bill want some kind of accountability. People should be absolutely enraged not just that this abuse was happening, but that every single state doesn’t require drug testing for recipients. Crazy...
The thrust of the bill was by the pole dancer and payed for by food stamps.
“Permanent removal from program?”
Sounds right to me.
Just abide by the rules and there won’t be any problems.
They will find a way around it...
Eliminate the program
Problem solved
Gimmedats will just trade their EBT credit for whatever they want. Drugs, smokes, booze, hookers, you name it.
And YOU’RE paying for it.
Really? Taxpayer’s money going for all that? What took them so long and why is this person fighting it think it’s too harsh?
Are people supposed to bring their own bag lunches to those places now?
bs and they will never be able to track it anyway...so it won’t work which is what they really want!
You’re confusing food assistance with cash welfare.
Cash welfare is supposed to go towards living expenses. Food assistance is for food only.
Some people’s EBT cards are loaded with both benefits. Its easy to abuse cash welfare.
Gee, is it that the taxpayers are tired of paying for this crud?? First clue being ....
Right you are. NONE of the wealth redistribution programs serviced by EBT cards exist with any constitutional authorization whatsoever.
Government employees who adminster the social safety net don’t value the tax money under their control as would a Christian relief organization. The relief organization views their funds as precious, scarce resource while the Lois Lerner types could give a rat’s a$$ about misuse of the public till.
This whole issue could be solved by getting government the he## out of social issues.
What? Olives, lemons, cherries, pretzels and beer-nuts ain’t food???
Had me going for a second, thought it was the US House instead of an individual state one. Dang...
Amazing how our entitled gibsmedats feign offense...
I believe they are feigning at all. I think they now thoroughly believe they are entitled to whatever they want for free.
Isn’t this racist?
My, just think if you were to use Doctor Who’s Tardis to go back to 1931 New York City or Chicago and tell the people waiting in the lines at the soup kitchens that people about eighty years later would be using welfare benefits (intended to help the needy) for strip clubs and liquor stores. The reactions would be interesting to say the least.
