Push for Transparency Continues Over City's Unprecedented RNC Riot Gear Request

The city of Cleveland is seeking an unprecedented amount of riot gear and security equipment for July's Republican National Convention as emotional unrest and physical violence follow the GOP front runner across the U.S.

Donald Trump, in fact, has predicted riots if he wins the most number of delegates but is not formally nominated during the convention. It’s a prediction that local leaders have called “irresponsible” and “dangerous,” and one which continues to fuel the narrative that repressive, military police tactics are necessary during the RNC.

This month, the city posted a request for bids on a spectrum of riot gear: 2,000 sets of riot-control suits and 26-inch batons, three miles of steel bike-rack-style barriers, 25 sets of tactical armor, 300 patrol bicycles and 310 sets of bicycle riot control gear, among other equipment needs. (The police department does not currently have a bicycle unit; nor does it have a training program for such.) The bid package dwarfs similar requests from cities that hosted national conventions in recent history.

Guess they haven't been noticing the challenges during the primaries....

Too much riot gear? I don't think that question really needs to be asked!

I have no idea, but according to the Fox 8 I-Team report, other cities locally won’t be sending in officers to help... sounds like they are going to come up short in regards to staffing for events.

It amazes me that people are in such denial. Keep in mind, these fascist “protesters” are trying to silence us. Silence and even intimidate delegates at a contested convention

This is about OUR right to free speech, peaceful Assembly, etc.

Maybe it is high time to threaten lawsuits against these organizations for inciting riots, these are not protests!

“Effective March 23, 2015, Ohio recognizes the concealed handgun license of any non-resident who has a valid concealed handgun license from any other state, regardless of whether Ohio has entered into a reciprocity agreement with that state.”

So those planning to attend as delegates should consider their own means of self defense.

“Nearly 20,000 support petition to allow guns at Republican National Convention.”

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/03/26/nearly-20000-support-petition-to-allow-guns-at-republican-national-convention.html

The petition claims that because Cleveland is one of the most dangerous cities in the world, forcing attendees to leave their weapons at home is putting everyone at risk.

“Without the right to protect themselves, those at the Quicken Loans Arena will be sitting ducks, utterly helpless against evil-doers, criminals or others who wish to threaten the American way of life.”

Cleveland is not a dangerous city for convention goers if they stay in the Disneyworld-like area that is very heavily supervised for out of town visitors when there's a convention. Walking alone at night or going outside those areas could get problematic.

Something really weird got approved. For the convention, bars and restaurants in Cuyahoga and surrounding counties can get liquor licenses to serve booze until 4AM. What could go wrong?

As far as police from other departments getting involved, even with a great paycheck, they'd have to be insane to do so. If any aggressive crowd control is necessary, the risk of lawsuit and destruction of their careers is just too great.

FWIW, since were an OH thread, I'll express my thought here. Consider the floor plan of the Q, where the convention will be held. It's not a place I'd want to be if it had to be evacuated. It's also not a place where people in the seating sections with guns is something that could be easily supervised.

Grania, I agree that under normal convention type events, Cleveland can handle things.

But, even Stove Loomis is getting concerned ast they can’t meet the Fed. Gov’t FEMA guidelines for even personnel!

Plus, this ain’t going to be our grandmother’s type convention! You don’t think outside protests will riot?

I think what could potentially happen could make the Kent State massacre look like a friendly college gathering and Chicago 1968 a family vacation. Sometimes when things are anticipated, they can be averted. One of the big problems those of us who live in and near Cleveland are still disgusted with is the (mostly out of town) Black Lives Matter protestors were allowed to rum amuck. I hope that's a lesson learned.

I don't think any city could contain the worst-case scenario for the conventions this summer. Meanwhile, I never underestimate Mayor Frank Jackson. He's done a real fine job in Cleveland not letting become Detroit, Ferguson, or Baltimore. The city did a real nice job at the rally soon after the Chicago Trump rally situation.

It's odd, but I find myself in acceptance of a potential outcome. If things go too badly and folks lose all pretentions that voting matters, then I could see a Doomsday situation. We've slid so far, and those who won't give up power either don't get it or don't care.

Add airport fire trucks and fill them with stinky liquids.

I don’t think the protesters are going to be allowed downtown.
First of all, it will take hours to get through security, and all hotels are filled. Protesters will have to stay outside of city limits and if law enforcement is overwhelmed, they will just plop them down in the Muni lot or something so things can go as planned.

I think they are going to be very disappointed that terrorism concerns trumped Soros’s money.
