During Holy Thursday Mass, Pope Francis washed the feet of migrants, three of whom were Muslims. Most Catholics understood this as a gesture of humility and brotherhood. That is how the Catholic press reported it—and that, undoubtedly, was the Pope’s intention.
Many Muslims, however, may see it differently—not as a gesture of brotherhood, but as one of submission and surrender. The word “Islam” means “submission,” and submission is what Islam expects of other faiths. Muslims consider Islam to be the supreme religion. To the extent that it tolerates the “People of the Book” (Christians and Jews), Islam tolerates them on the condition that they acknowledge its supremacy.
When the Pope kneels before a Muslim, these are the thoughts that will come into the minds of many followers of Islam. For them, the Pope’s gesture will serve as confirmation of the age-old Islamic conception of Christianity as a second-rate religion. Although some Muslims may be moved by the Pope’s gesture and some may even be converted, it’s likely that a majority of Muslims will interpret it as a sign of weakness.

Francis, good intentions aside, is washing the feet of impenitent pagans.
I can understand breaking bread with them and showing them love, but the foot washing of Jesus was, if I understand correctly, a way for Jesus to show he was going to serve those in His Kingdom....He even told his ambitious disciples that the greatest among them would be their servant.
While Jesus did befriend “sinners”, he did so to point them to himself.

Jesus was TRULY serving the 12 when He washed their feet. If someone would truly want to serve, they’d was the bugs off their windshield, not repeat an outdated practice that is obsolete.
Wash their feet with high pressure pressure hoses. Make them dance as the skin is sloughed off.

This Pope acts like an idiot. I’m praying for the Catholic Church.

Well, I think this poseur has plenty of the latter and not too much of the former.
Jesus expected the 12 --- or maybe, 11 of them --- to go out and do likewise: exercise servant-leadership.
I am not sure, but I don't think that point was even obscurely made by Pope Francis on Holy Thursday. Though I would love to be proved wrong.
Our preacher spoke on this on Maundy Thursday. The foot washing was usually done by the slave servants. It was also done sometimes as a sign of love and devotion. I always viewed it more as “service to others”, but it sounds like it was so much more than that - devotion. Which of course if you love others as God does, the reason why you are doing service is because you love them and God.
I can see where muslims might see the pope as weak and stupid in this. I suppose many gestures of Christian charity can be seen as weak and stupid.
We went to a church where lots of homeless came through and the pastor was very willing with the handouts. His thought was better to err on being taken than to turn away an angel. We finally did have to put a system in place of gift cards to local fast food places, bus passes, etc. Even created a multi-church list to weed out the chronic scammers that would go from church to church. (With over 12 churches nearby, one could get their gas bill paid every month if they did it right!)

I understand your post, and that it looks like I am being dismissive of Jesus’ example, but not everything Jesus did was meant to become a sacrament, hence we don’t see very many Mud and Spittle Eye Poultice Ceremonies.
No doubt the Muslims look upon him as The Patsy Of Rome and plan to do to the Vatican what they did to the Hagia Sophia - turn it into a mosque of Satan.
Interesting that you should say that "not everything was a Sacrament," because in the Catholic Church this is not considered one of the Seven Sacraments, and yet I've always thought it should have been. (Say, Sacrament #8). Why? Because it seems to fit the criteria
"You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one anothers' feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them. "
