Against the Dangerous Myth that the GOP Has ‘Given Obama Everything He Wanted’
National Review ^ | May 6, 2016 | CHARLES C. W. COOKE

...

The Republican party is an imperfect vehicle and it has, of course, made mistakes. But the idea that it hasn’t effectively and consistently opposed President Obama’s agenda is little more than a dangerous and ignorant fiction. Had the GOP not been standing in the way — both from 2008, when it was in the minority everywhere, and from 2010, when it regained the House — the United States would look dramatically different than it does today. Without the GOP manning the barricades, Obamacare could well have been single payer, and, at the very least, the law would have included a “public option.” Without the GOP manning the barricades, we’d have seen a carbon tax or cap-and-trade — or both. Without the GOP manning the barricades, we’d have got union card check, and possibly an amendment to Taft-Hartley that removed from the states their power to pass “right to work” exemptions. Without the GOP standing in the way, we’d now have an “assault weapons” ban, magazine limits, background checks on all private sales, and a de facto national gun registry. And without the GOP standing in the way in the House, we’d have got the very amnesty that the Trump people so fear (it’s fine to oppose Marco Rubio for his support for the “Gang of 8″ bill, but it’s not fine to pretend that it didn’t matter that the Republicans ran the House when the reform bill left the Senate; it did).

The President cannot spend a single dime without it having gotten through Congress. Blame it on “mandatory programs”, “baseline budgeting” or agreed budget deals, the fact remains that Congress has the power of the purse. But this is a power that the GOPe is afraid to use for political reasons and/or does not want to because they actually agree with the spending.

They’re completely serious.

These people are basically masochists who see their rightful role as that of a merely symbolic opposition party which will always lose, but at least they’ll have their ‘principles’.

There’s no pragmatism or ambition at all. Only conceited melodrama.

You nailed it. Instead of the weak apology of the National Review article, the naked truth is that Speaker Ryan--who now arrogantly wants Trump to compromise principle--forced through an outrageous budget, late last year, which should clearly have been rejected. You cannot simply agree to fund unconstitutional idiocy simply to get along.

What is intolerable is the "whipped cur" variety of Republican, who either through cowardice, an inferiority complex, or actual perfidy, is unwilling to engage a President who refuses any compromise on his agenda, lest such Republicans get blamed for a shutdown, directly attributable to anyone with a mind to reason, to the intransigence of the President.

They not only gave it to him, they smiled and asked “What else can we do, sir?”

Trump is not damaging the Republican Brand, Congress has done it to themselves by selling out the voters for so many years. That parrott is dead, folks!

The other day Michael Medved was ranting about how the deficit is the lowest it’s been in years under the Republican congress. As usual, he’s missing the point. There shouldn’t be a deficit at all! Sure, Republicans block things, but they just allow the same crap to grow just a little bit slower — whether regulation, debt, or social anarchy — it still happens under Republicans, just a hair slower.

...and as usual, they just don’t get it.
