WASHINGTON A bill that would let the families of those killed in the Sept. 11 attacks sue Saudi Arabia for any role in the terrorist plot passed the Senate unanimously on Tuesday, bringing Congress closer to a showdown with the White House, which has threatened to veto the legislation.
The Senates passage of the bill, which will now be taken up in the House, is another sign of escalating tensions in a relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia that once received little scrutiny from lawmakers.
Obama administration officials have lobbied against the bill, a view that the White House spokesman Josh Earnest reiterated after the vote. And the Saudi government has warned that if the legislation passes, it might begin selling off up to $750 billion in Treasury securities and other assets in the United States before they face a danger of being frozen by American courts.
Adel al-Jubeir, the Saudi foreign minister, delivered the warning to lawmakers and administration officials while in Washington in March.
Many economists are skeptical that the Saudis would deliver on such a warning, saying that a sell-off would be hard to execute and would do more harm to the kingdoms economy than to Americas.

Can we sue the mosques next?
Veto.
After all these years???? What is really going on here?
Kabuki theater. They know Obama will veto it, so they can go all King Kong and puff and strut for the cameras.
O will defend his Saudi IslamoNazi comrades.
But at the same time he’s trying to overthrow them for even worse IslamoNazi dictators (watch as Obama’s Iranian pals take over the Saudi, etc. oil wells on the northeast of S.Arabia... )
They can sue, but they’ll never get a dime, and the U.S will never freeze any of their assets.
The Senate might actually overturn a veto? Heaven forbid!
Yep, phony as usual. The vote was recorded as unanimous, but somehow when it comes to the veto override, they will let the ones up for election vote yes and the rest “no”. They will somehow fail to override by one vote.
“After all these years???? What is really going on here?”
Maybe some trial lawyers, deep in the Democrat Party apparatus, see the opportunity to grab a huge slush fund, which they can administer and milk for many years.
There is no honor among thieves. The deep Saudi pockets may just be irresistible.
Another theory, is that the new Prince who is running things in Saudi Arabia, has secretly given a green light (or even a push) to get this out in the open, as an excuse to purge more of the old guard. Let the Americans be the bad cop for him.
And how will people collect?
Unanimous in the Senate? Even the Rats? How’d that happen?
The only thing this will accomplish will be to make trial lawyers rich.
Even Obama can’t veto a unanimous vote in the Senate. All they really needed was 60% in the Senate and the president can’t overturn the vote with a veto.
Yes kabuki. That all it is anymore.
