Navy Secretary Ray Mabus says in a letter that he has the power to name warships as he chooses, in response to a former Marine and congressman who charges he has politicized the process.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, California Republican and House Armed Services Committee member, wrote Mr. Mabus to question the naming of an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer after former Sen. Carl Levin, Michigan Democrat and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

That is the sign of a leader.NOT an Organizer

There are a bunch of ships that need to be renamed. And done so at “re-christening” ceremonies by Christian chaplains.

The Navy has renamed ships so that a name could be used on newer vessels.

For example renaming an old battleship so that the name could be applied to a new one. Illinois was renamed Prairie State so that Illinois could be used for planned new construction.

“Navy Secretary Ray Mabus says in a letter that he has the power to name warships as he chooses...”

Perhaps, but Congress has the power to take that power away from you if you take it for granted and abuse it!

I reckon it could be good luck, if the ship was unlucky with the previous name...

To be honest, John Mabus has named about 40 US Navy Ships with the USS designation, and a good 20 or so support ships with the USNS (US Naval Ship), non-combat ships.

A large majority have little issue. Many named for heroes and medal of honor recipients. One for LBJ, who though was democrat and liberal, was also a US Navy veteran.

But he has gone out of his way in several instances to name ships for uber-liberal icons, or their causes:

USS Car Levin is a new Arleigh Burke destroyer being named for a liberal Michigan Democrat.,

USNS Ceaser Chavez is a Lewis and Clark class replenishment ship named for a ultra-liberal leftists and union organizer, who plainly stated he hated the US Navy after his discharge from the same. Those ships, everyone of them were named for famous explorers except that one.

USNS John Lewis is the first in class of a new replenishment oiler, which means they will all be known as the John Lewis class, named for a liberal democrat activist. US Navy policy called for them to be named after Rivers or individuals instrumental in maritime production, but Mabus changed the policy and they will all be named for civil rights activists instead.

USS John Murtha, a San Antonio Class Landing Platform Dock (LPD) Amphibious assault ship, named for this liberal democrat. All other ships in the class were named either for Cities, or a park or county.

USS Gabriella Gifford, an Independence Littoral Combat Ship, which Mabus named for the Democrat congresswoman who was shot in 2011. All of the others are named for American cities.

So, Mabus chang3es the rules and conventions when it suits him, and almost every time he has done that (which in truth are a minority of the ships he has named) it has been for some liberal cause or person.

my point exactly .....
Civ politicos should not be in the position to call such shots.
They are clueless and they endanger our country . They extend the
pure perfidy of the present squatter in the WH .

A proper War Department , led by a committee of proven and acknowledged COMBAT LEADERS and effective Flag Officers , should alone be empowered to select their Service leadership . NOT civilian know nothings

In the meantime ‘they’ should quietly tell the community organizer to go easy , real easy , if he’d like to have any legacy at all . . .
It’s time for our Mil to stop taking s#it from these pathetic morons .

Forgot about that. Yes, the state names were removed from the pre-dreadnought armored cruisers and replaced with major city names from within the same state. ie. ex-USS California was renamed USS San Diego.

Ships can, and should be, renamed.

We have actual heroes that should be honored before politicians.
