Batley and Spen MP Jo Cox has been shot and injured in Birstall near Leeds, an eyewitness has said. Ms Cox was elected as a Labour MP at the general election in 2015 and has two children. An eyewitness said the 41-year-old was left lying bleeding on the pavement after the incident. The attack took place near the town's library where she held advice surgeries.

IIRC, in the UK you are allowed to own a long gun for sports shooting after getting the approval of local and national law enforcement. However the gun must be kept at an armory controlled by local police. If you wish to use you gun you must ask permission in advance and provide are pertinent info; where, why and when. Then, maybe, you will be able to use your gun.

I believe it’s similar to a congresscritter holding an “open house” in their home district for constituents to walk in and discuss issues.

That’s an interesting statement. George Orwell wrote in his novel Nineteen Eighty-four of totalitarians wanting to eliminate the meaning of the word “free” so that when used it could only mean, for example, “This dog is free of lice.”
A person could not say “I want to be free”, because at least as used in that context there was no understanding of for “free” any more in that sense, so the person could not describe what he or she was feeling.
