How a Ban on Tea Kettles Could Drive Britain to a Brexit
The Fiscal Times ^ | June 15, 2016 | Liz Peek

As is so often the case, a momentous decision may be triggered by something quite small. Indeed, the future of the western world may come down to this: a squabble over tea kettles. The Brits are riled up by the imminent threat that the EU, driven by its aggressive climate agenda, will outlaw the electric tea pots that the English have relied upon for generations to produce their daily fix of Earl Grey and toast.

New “eco-design” regulations governing small appliances have been on the EU shelf for months, delayed by officials correctly worried they might ignite a firestorm of protest just as Brits prepared to vote on their European alliance. Jean-Claude Juncker, European Commission president, finally decided at an April 20 meeting to plow ahead with the new rules.

The issue grabbed headlines when David Coburn, EU skeptic and UKIP Member of the European Parliament, tweeted in February, “My toaster takes 4 attempts before bread goes brown and can put My Dundee marmalade on many thanks to EU.”

This could be Great Britain’s version of the Boston Tea Party.

Afternoon tea is serious business in Great Britain and it’s one of the things that makes them British. The EU may have really gone too far.

If the British vote to leave the EU, I’ll celebrate with some afternoon Earl Gray tea and toast to commemorate. Hope other Freepers do the same.

To form an economic union is one thing but to create an unelected uber-government to rule over your sovereign nation without the consent of the governed, that was a really bad idea.

If their tea pots are similar to the one I used in Australia, they must be eco-friendly. The heating element was immersed in the water, and with the 230 volt supply, the water was boiling hot in seconds.

I don't get why they would even try to get rid of the electric kettle.

It is much more eco-friendly then boiling water on the cooker.

I’ve heard stories of British tank crews stopping during the normandy campaign midday to “brew up a cuppa”. Right in the middle of combat! You do not get between a Brit and their tea.

What kind of an idiot populace would start a war of independence over tea?

Oh.

Oh, yeah. Never mind.

I don't know about Normandy, but I think they did that in the Operation Market Garden.

I've read that the reason for the Brits and their tea was out of patriotism.

Both George III and Louis XV (iirc) got a cutting from an Arabica coffee plant.

Louis sent his propagations to points South in the Caribbean, South & Central America.

George sent his to Ceylon, where the plants encountered leaf rust, and in the desperation to make Ceylon a viable colony, they managed to get a hold of tea plants as a replacement crop.

Perhaps they expect people to nuke each cup?

I got a basic electric kettle for my French Press. Yeah, the 230v sounds a lot better.

Based on my stay in the UK, apparently tea kettles and TVs that are used in hotel rooms in the UK have to be inspected yearly.

I don’t like the immersion type devices - bit of a pain.

I have and use an electric kettle several times daily.

These electric kettles in the USA and UK reduce CO2 emissions far more than all the solar cells in the UK and USA.

Britain is a bit on the chilly side.

Cups of hot tea allow whole house heating to be reduced greatly.
