How one political news site decided to stand out: By not covering the 2016 race
Washington Post ^ | 6/27/2016 | Margaret Sullivan

Last summer, shortly after the first Republican presidential debate, the editors of the Daily Signal made a decision. Although its digital-only staff of 25 reporters and editors works less than two miles from the White House, they wouldn’t write about the presidential campaign — not at all.

Nary a mention of Donald Trump’s pronouncements, despite the readership that he produces. No Corey Lewandowski dust-ups; no Hillary Clinton stopping at Chipotle; no horse race.

“We struggled with the decision,” says Robert Bluey, the Signal’s editor in chief. “But we ultimately decided that there was no way our small, ragtag team could do it justice, against the bigger sites, and we were better off doing other things well.”

Yes, a presidential race is just too newsworthy for your plucky little site.

We are, however, enjoying your ten-part series on The Mushrooms Of Angola.

In this day and age...they can "identify" as anything they want to be.

So a small team with no ability to cover a national election ‘decided’ not to, and so Trump is awful.

Got it.

..no Hillary Clinton stopping at Chipotle.

....and no mention of the two massive FBI investigations into the lying criminal’s illegal use of a personal internet server to conduct sensitive government business and her illegal pay-for-play “charity” foundation.

No wait actually NONE of the media is reporting on that stuff.

Great idea, but they look and smell like GOPe to me, which is pretty disappointing.

A secret: I stole that title from a MAD Magazine article about free stuff, albeit useless stuff. In that instance it was the US Government Printing Office which you know, if you are of a certain age, was in Pueblo, CO of all places.

The cartoon panel accompanying it had the reader engrossed in a pamphlet on The Mushrooms Of Angola and I adopted it as a catch-all for the irrelevant and insignificant.

Kind of like running a Beatles site and refusing to mention John, Paul, George or Ringo.

wellll ignoring a lot of the daily and weekly “horse race” makes a lot of sense for everyone.... there is too much of that

but the idea that a “political” publication should not cover the issues of the 2016 election is bizarre....

Agreed, the day to day events of the “horse race” are just filler mostly... Red meat for the masses... but really have little overall impact on anything.

Major events swing elections... another stump speech in some little town, might have some impact in the local area, but its not really a noteworthy even nationally.

Candidate A gave the same stump speech they’ve given a 1000 times at a different high school auditorium today... Candidate B did the same.

That’s really the campaign for the most part day to day.

There seems to be a quiet time going on. Nothing from Beck, Mitt, most of the candidates, etc. They’re working behind the scenes. And many of the news sites are not carrying any Trump news...unless it can be spun negative. And just last week, my Congressman announced he will not be attending the convention. and he is also a delegate. Wimp. I have never seen such a concerted effort against a private citizen in my whole life. A man who stepped out of his obvious comfort to try and make things better. And the mob wants to do nothing less than shut him down, politically, pile on frivolous lawsuits, character assaults, you name it.

Hopefully your Congressman will be replaced by a pro-Trump delegate!
