Shoot what’s popular and readily available - 9mm, .40, 5.56, 7.62, 12ga.

If the other shoe drops, there won’t be a Wal-Mart open.

Sound advice IMO. More likely you will be bartering for ammo from a fellow survivor than buying it at Wal-Mart. I would also recommend your AR is a true 5.56 so it can chamber .223 and 5.56.

People often ask me how to go about building a good firearm collection just in case things start to go south quickly.

You will need more than a good and simple set of firearms to protect yourself and family so your focus on guns seems suspiciously narrow. Think self-defense, food and water, warmth, energy independence, health and hygiene.

I would also recommend your AR is a true 5.56 so it can chamber .223 and 5.56.

I don't know for a fact, but it seems like there aren't many AR platform rifles now that are chambered only for .223.
