Pet peeve: why is that so many use the word ‘coronate’ when they mean ‘crown’? Maybe they don’t realize that a coronation is a crowning.

Because they are poorly educated and/or stupid and/or unable to think logically.
It’s the new level of “literacy” emerging in this country as a result of substandard edumakation. It will only get worse as the new set of cupcakes move into these positions.

but why use that term at all? The United States is not a monarchy. Why not say something like "name" or ... something else. Too lazy to get out my thesaurus. ;)
