New North Carolina bill establishes the opposite of sanctuary cities

If North Carolina was tired of all the controversy surrounding HB2 there’s no better way to move the conversation than by passing yet another bill which gets liberals up in arms. That seems to be what’s happening with the passage of HB100, an addition to the existing Protect North Carolina Workers Act. This legislation is aimed at weeding out illegal immigrants and ensuring that jobs go to citizens rather than paving the way further for law breakers, while putting penalties in place for any nascent “sanctuary cities” that don’t comply. An article by Tanvi Misra at Route Fifty exemplifies the liberal outrage which immediately erupted.

On Tuesday, the Senate passed another bill, HB 100, which aims to hold school and road funds hostage if cities don’t comply with anti-immigrant state laws.

HB 100 sharpens the teeth of HB 318, which Governor Pat McCrory signed into law in 2015. That legislation was a swarming nest of policies explicitly targeting undocumented immigrants in the state. Via WRAL:

House Bill 318, dubbed the Protect North Carolina Workers Act, also requires state and local government agencies to use the E-Verify system to check the legal status of job applicants and contractors, bars government agencies or law enforcement from using consular or embassy documents to verify someone’s identity or residence and limits food assistance for able-bodied, childless adults who are unemployed.

Huh. I immediately noticed the phrase, “explicitly targeting undocumented immigrants.” In other parts of the country we refer to that as, “enforcing the law.”

This bill does a number of things, including eliminating the use of “local ID” (specifically designed for illegals) when dealing with the police, reinforces the use of E-Verify to ensure that employers are hiring citizens, records the legal status of people seeking to be excused from jury duty and makes it easier for citizens to report instances of illegal aliens being hired. Perhaps most importantly, it provides the ability to suspend state funding to municipalities which refuse to comply with these requirements. In short, this prevents the establishment of so called sanctuary cities in North Carolina and it’s precisely what we should be doing on a national level.

And yet this is all being described by the local media, the ACLU and liberal activists as “anti-immigrant.” Here’s a news flash for you: nobody is passing any laws which discriminate against immigrants who follow the rules and come to our country legally, either to visit or establish residency and contribute to society and the economy. These laws target criminals. If you have a problem with that perhaps you should reexamine your own motivations.

This can be done..we just need the will of the people and the strength of our elected officials.

I like the old, correct term, “illegal aliens.” That is what they are. They should NOT be entitled to welfare benefits. The USA is $20 trillion in debt. We can’t afford it. Liberals always want to appear compassionate by spending OTHER PEOPLE’S money.

“Liberals always want to appear compassionate by spending OTHER PEOPLE’S money.”

We used to get mad at liberals for spending our money on American citizens; now they don’t even do that, they spend our money ($20,000 per year per person) on foreign Jihadists. What’s next?

Hasn’t Oklahoma already done this and the laws stand? As state themselves tighten down on illegals they , the illegals, start to run to those states that will give them money like NY and CAL. Let those states take them all.

Having recently escaped SoCal after living next to a sanctuary city—you do NOT ever want to live near one. Ever.

Good for NC for having the backbone to actually enforce the law—a bold move these days.

A sanctuary City for Constitutional Conservatives?
What a capital idea!

We must find a proper name for those.

Any Ideas?

Liberals, like foreign nationals IN OR OUT OF GOVERNMENT, ARE PERMANENTLY AND ABSOLUTELY IN NO POSITION TO TELL AMERICAN CITIZENS "WHO WE ARE!!!!!!!"

We live in the Tampa Bay area of Florida and it would amaze you how many people who live here don’t know that Tampa and St. Petersburg are sanctuary cities. Florida has always had a reputation for strong law enforcement and it is a big issue for the seniors and retirees here.

What these cities here have done, and I assume others have as well, is pass the local laws through the city councils. It is done, in effect, in the dark of night; they don’t have any citizen input because they advertise what they are doing only with the minimum required and they use misleading wording. The city councils that use to be business leaders are now loaded with immigrant activists.

When they get called out for it, they mislead the people even more.

Yes, and Oklahoma’s laws weren’t even challenged, that I remember. And their illegals scurried into Kansas, who welcomed them was open arms.

And our State govt does NOTHING to remedy the injustice.

Bad enough Scott and the lot passed in-State tuition...another affront the taxpayer/legal immigrant.

No, don’t look to GOVT to correct that which it creates.
