Lt. Col. Charles S. Kettles, an Army helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War, will be awarded the Medal of Honor in a ceremony later this month for an act of heroism almost 50 years ago. At the time he was given the Distinguished Service Cross, but a dedicated amateur historian finally talked the Department of Defense into reviewing the matter. Following an act of Congress and a Presidential signature (required for Medal of Honor awards), Kettles will receive his new medal in a July 18 ceremony at the White House.

Frankly, at his age, he can’t afford to wait for the next president to make the award; and they don’t mail ‘em. He’s struck with the turd making the presentation.

Thanks for posting! Not to be a nose-picker, but article states “....he dropped off 80 men from 101st Infantry Division.” Would this not be 101st Airborne Division?

Legacy[edit]

Herbert Shughart, Randall Shughart’s father, attended the Medal of Honor presentation ceremony at the White House, where he refused to shake hands with U.S. President Bill Clinton.[10] He then proceeded to openly criticize the president, saying, “You are not fit to be president of the United States. The blame for my son’s death rests with the White House and with you. You are not fit to command.”[11]

My best friend died 8 years ago. He was a Cobra gunship pilot in Vietnam. He received his silver star from an action in Vietnam only 7 or 8 days before his death.
Why does our government wait so freeking long to award medals?

They usually don’t take so long but the system is not perfect. There are soldiers who’ve accomplished extraordinary acts of valor who’ve never been recognized.
