A look at how Texas' guns on campus law will work

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas will allow concealed handgun license holders to carry their weapons into public university buildings, classrooms and dorms starting Monday, which is also the 50th anniversary of the mass shooting at the University of Texas' landmark clock tower.

The campus-carry law pushed by Gov. Greg Abbott and the Republican legislative majority will make Texas one of a handful of states that guarantee the right to carry concealed handguns on campus. Here's a Q &A on how the law will work:

I think Texas academics need to seek alignment with the cultural norms of the citizens who support their institutions.

Why the hysteria about allowing sane, law abiding people to carry guns on campus? Texas institutions of higher learning have never done anything to prevent criminals and crazy people from carrying guns on campus.

And by the way, I think University of Texas Austin needs a good lawsuit filed against them.

Wow Jim, guess you don't know much about Texas law.

There is no longer any such thing as a TX CHL, as that was eliminated when open carry passed last year. It's actually an LTC, 'License to Carry'. The only exception you can maybe argue for is that people whose CHLs haven't expired yet still have one.

For example, at the University of Texas at Austin, where faculty and students vigorously protested the law, teachers will be allowed to declare their offices as gun-free zones, but most will post signs announcing it.

Actually, if they want to ban guns from their office, they are required to post a 30.06 sign. Also, it has to go through the University's process of determining gun-free zones, they can't just post it wherever they want to.

Dorm residents can have guns in common areas, such as dining areas and lounges, but not sleeping rooms, where no storage of weapons is allowed.

That might not last too long, if you can't keep it with you that has the effect of generally disarming you. And, I doubt most people will 'store' their pistols in their dorm room, they'll just keep them on their person at all times.

Currently, Amberton University, which doesn't allow students under 21 and has a total enrollment under 2,000, is the only private school that has opted to allow guns.

True, but I kinda have a hard time seeing SMU or Baylor or other fancy places marring the look of their buildings with a 30.06 sign on every entrance. I could be wrong (hafta drive by SMU to see), but it doesn't seem like decor that fits the theme of the building style.
