DODGE CITY, Kansas It was a scene out of 1950s Americana: Tim Huelskamp waved to constituents at a parade in this old cowboy town, smiling as his sons handed out bubble gum and campaign fliers urging a vote on Tuesday for the Republican congressman a Proven Principled Conservative.
But the niceties on display last weekend belied a ferocious intra-Republican feud unfolding here in Kansas sprawling 1st Congressional District. Residents of the onetime stomping grounds of Wyatt Earp have been bombarded with competing TV ads and mailers, blasting Huelskamp as an ineffective troublemaker whos lost his sway on critical agricultural issues. Theyre urging voters to replace the Freedom Caucus member with Roger Marshall, an obstetrician running for office for the first time.
Whats resulted in the Big First, as locals in the rural 63-county district call it, is an unlikely, multimillion dollar proxy fight this summer between some of the most powerful interests in the Republican Party. Outside conservative groups, including the Club for Growth and Koch brothers-backed Americans for Prosperity, have swooped in to try and save Huelskamp in Tuesdays primary, while the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Ricketts familys Ending Spending group are spending big to send the three-term congressman back to Kansas.

The Establishment is out for blood!!
Tim Huelskamp is a great American and he’s being opposed by a GOPE hack.
Huelskamp stands for liberty and small government. He opposes all forms of farm welfare and big corporate/chamber of commerce crony capitalism.
The guy is a stalwart, solid in the cause, but now in a dogfight and down by a couple.
Competing ads now at every commercial break in prime time. He has been under media assault for a coupe months and is now responding. Kansas primary Tuesday. Nailbiter.
I thought the Club for Growth and Koch brothers were part of the evil establishment (I’ve heard freepers say so), but they are supporting HUELSKAMP, not his RINO challenger? :o :o I guess the Club for Growth must be conservative after all.
This is classic reserve tea party, a liberal “outsider” attacks the conservative and calls him an “insider”. Usually in the past I’ve seen freepers fall for that, it’s refreshing to see that no one is this time.
Kansas RINOs are being very belligerent lately attacking conservatives in the state with lies. Ricketts group is called “Ending Spending”, and they will end spending by electing a RINO who would increase agriculture pork? LOL.
“Im not voting for Washing-Tim, quipped one paid off loser at a barbecue cook-off, directly quoting an ad paid for by the Ricketts-backed group.”
Oh, how clever, not.
