A University of Oregon law professor wore a costume that included "blackface" at an off-campus Halloween party, prompting outcry from student groups and a decision to place the professor on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
President Michael Schill sent out a campus-wide message commenting on the incident Tuesday, condemning the unnamed professor's actions as an "anathema to the University of Oregon's cherished values of racial diversity and inclusion." UO's law school dean, chief academic officer and dean of inclusion all signed onto the message.
The faculty member apparently wore blackface to an off-campus private party where other faculty members and students were in attendance, according to Schill's message. Blackface has long been associated with damaging racial stereotypes, yet Halloween costumes involving the offensive practice are still in use and routinely appear on social media feeds.
Late Wednesday evening, a group of 23 School of Law faculty members circulated an open letter calling on their colleague to resign "if these allegations are true."
"It doesn't matter what your intentions were," the faculty members wrote. "It doesn't matter if it was protected by the First Amendment. Blackface is patently offensive. It is overtly racist. It is wildly inappropriate. It reflects a profound lack of judgment. There is no excuse."
A student group starting an online petition Wednesday calling on the unnamed faculty member to resign.
The university declined to release the professor's name and The Oregonian/OregonLive wasn't able to independently verify the professor's identity pending public records requests.
The incident came a few months into a school year that had already seen action taken on some of the university's controversial past.
Just this fall, UO's board of trustees voted to remove the name of a former Ku Klux Klan leader in Eugene from a dormitory.
The administration learned about the offensive costume after someone reported the incident to Law School Dean Michael Moffitt. The administration referred the issue to the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity, which is investigating the situation and will decide whether the faculty member violated school policy.
According to Schill's letter, the faculty member apologized.
The incident points to the need for "more training and dialogue on the critical issues," Schill said.
In addition to removing the former KKK-leader's name from the campus dorm, the university is considering renaming Deady Hall, the oldest building on campus and named for one of the school's founders.
The naming controversy came after the Black Student Task Force raised the issue last school year, along with a series of other proposals to make the campus safer for students of color.
Schill called making the campus more welcoming and inclusive "one of the university's top priorities.
"We have been working for more than a year with our students to further these objectives. This incident makes us even more determined to ensure that no member of the UO community feels isolated or alienated on this campus as a result of intentional or unintentional racist behavior."
The law school faculty group's letter struck an angry tone. "We are angry that you would alienate our students, staff, and faculty of color," they wrote. "We are angry that you would destroy what others have worked hard to build. Your actions implicate all of us and our community. If you care about our students, you will resign. If you care about our ability to educate future lawyers, you will resign. If you care about our alumni, you will resign."
It’s not about the law; it’s about whether your friggin’ FEELINGS were hurt!!! Is THIS what they are teaching in law school today??? I would not hire a U. of Oregon Law graduate to fix a speeding ticket!!!!
Political Correctness is against the Constitution.
I’ve seen a pic of Hillary in blackface with Bill, once upon a time ... anyone seen it ?
yes, it is a hoax.
I’d be this school President would have no problem with a professor calling for the annihilation of Israel or sending Trump supporters to internment camps.
Anyone who says the First Amendment doesn't matter should be lined up against the wall and shot.
Wow. We’re at the point where you have to look at invitations to costume parties with circumspection. Do you trust the person who sent you the invite? The group throwing the party? Who will be there?
Gauge the cultural winds. Choose the dullest costume imaginable. For the past few years, the safest thing you can dress up as is yourself. As a zombie.
Yes I have seen it but, it's not Bill & Hillary. Hoax Alert
He’s only a closet Black self identifier.
Years ago Mrs. Chandler and I attended a Halloween costume party. Most the people attending were Disneyland parade performers. A beautiful woman arrived dressed as a Southern belle. She was accompanied by a short black woman dressed as her house slave.
It wasn’t until the end of the evening we discovered the “belle” was a man. The slave girl was his white girlfriend.
That WOULD be protected by the First Amendment.
Laws only apply when convenient, you see.
How does one go about “investigating” somebody wearing “blackface” at a party? A rectal exam? Somebody is doing too many drugs.
OH PLUEEEEEZZZZZEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!
GET A LIFE YA WHINERZZZZ.
GET FRIGGING OVER IT.
CERTAINLY THERE MUST BE SOMETHING REALLY IMPORTANT THAT NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED???
I’VE GOT ABOUT 10 OR MORE PILES OF DOG CRAP IN THE BACKYARD AND THEY ARE....
OMG!!! BLACK
WORRY ABOUT THAT ALL NIGHT
When we were kids in the 50’s, my parents couldn’t afford to buy costumes for the four of us kids, so my Dad used to burn the end of a cork, and smudge our faces with the blackened cork so we’d look like hobos. If we tried to do that today we’d be chastised.
Yup - burnt cork is what we did too.
Yes. Every time I see a kabuki actor in whiteface, I start to tremble with rage.
