The long legislative career of Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal has ended.
The Democrat who has represented Council Bluffs and Carter Lake in the Iowa Legislature for more than 30 years lost his re-election bid Tuesday. Gronstal first won election to the Iowa Senate in November 1984. Before that, he served one term in the Iowa House.
Republican challenger Dan Dawson said Tuesday that he was humbled to be elected.
Dawson, who serves in the Army Reserve and has deployed to Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, is a special agent with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Gronstal was a strong gun-grabber.
To Iowans who still value freedom, this really was a big win, and was also a long overdue comeuppance for one of the worst party hacks in Iowa politics (and that is saying something). This and the survival of Rod Blum were two of the surprises of this election.
Such good news. Gronstal had a brilliant political mind. This will leave Jochum and Danielson calling the shots. And that’s probably good news for us, too.
