The long legislative career of Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal has ended. The Democrat who has represented Council Bluffs and Carter Lake in the Iowa Legislature for more than 30 years lost his re-election bid Tuesday. Gronstal first won election to the Iowa Senate in November 1984. Before that, he served one term in the Iowa House. Republican challenger Dan Dawson said Tuesday that he was “humbled” to be elected. Dawson, who serves in the Army Reserve and has deployed to Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, is a special agent with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
