German defense minister says Trump can't treat NATO like a business

U.S. president-elect Donald Trump needs to clarify his views on Russia, and to understand that NATO must be treated as an alliance of shared values rather than a business, Germany's defense minister said.

"What his advisors will hopefully tell him and what he needs to learn is that NATO isn't just a business. It's not a company," Ursula von der Leyen told a ZDF talk show on Thursday. "I don't know how he values NATO."

During his election campaign, Trump threatened to abandon U.S. allies in Europe if they do not spend enough on defense.

"You can't say 'the past doesn't matter, the values we share don't matter' but instead try to get as much money out of it (NATO) as possible and whether I can get a good deal out of it," she said.

Von der Leyen advised Trump against getting too close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, noting that NATO had stood by the United States after the 9/11 attacks.

"Donald Trump has to say clearly on which side he is. Whether he's on the side of the law, peace and democracy or whether he doesn't care about all that and instead he's looking for a best buddy (with Putin)," she said.

On Jan 21st, 2017 every NATO country should receive an official letter from the POTUS saying if they do not achieve 2% of GDP on military spending in 18 months, and sustain it, they forfeit their right to common defense under the treaty and no US resources will be expended to defend them.

The very same notice should go to every Asian ally as well.

Bingo, exactly right. Who the heck does this broad think she is? She’s nothing and had better shut up before she does even more damage to herself and NATO.

Screw you.

He’ll treat NATO anyway he pleases.

Nobody cares what Germany thinks.

Was that the German Depends minister? Sounds like it.

Trump is going to dialogue with them and come to an arrangement. Why not? He represents us, not them.

Folks, I don’t really want a full fledged German military in Europe. We tried that twice last century.

There is a price to keep peace that is reasoned. Trump will seek that price and make a deal.

I believe Donald said each member country must pay their fair share - no freeloaders

Trump is not treating NATO like a business. He is telling the member states that the time for freeloading is over.

Germany is a wealthy country and it is about time that they picked up a bigger share of the cost.

PS. Dear German officials, do not tell Trump what he can or can’t do. When he farts in your face you will take it and like it.

At least NATO chief Stoltenberg has supported Trump and said defence spending must go up.

And, the NATO line should be higher. 4-5 percent.

Germany spends approx 1.2% of GDP on military and is on a planned track to .9%.

That’s a freeloader any way you look at it.

And 2% will NOT make Germany a dominant military power.

Yes in a way it is a business.

Every employee pulls their fair share. Time for Europe, Japan and Germany to pull their fair share.
