1 million sign up for Obamacare for 2017 so far

Americans are still signing up for Obamacare, despite President-elect Trump's promise to repeal it soon after he takes office.

More than one million people selected plans for 2017 on the federal exchange in the first 12 days of open enrollment, which began November 1, according to the Department of Health & Human Services. That is 53,000 more than in the comparable period a year ago.

Administration officials are using enrollment data to promote the importance of Obamacare to Americans, trying to counter Republicans' assertions that it is pricey and broken.

1 million in a country of 330 million?

Sounds like an EPIC FAIL to me.

1 million people translates to about 300,000 “families”. So trivial!

Kind of a waste of time if McConnell and Ryan do what they promised to do first thing in January. But doing what they said they would do is always problematic.

McConnell and Ryan are equivalent to Democrat opposition to Trump.

Given how many people are no longer working in jobs that offer employer-supported health insurance, and given that the law currently *requires* people to carry insurance whether they want it or not, and given also that the penalties for not carrying insurance are substantially higher now than at the beginning, why is it any surprise that people are continuing to sign up? They have to, in the face of ever-steeper tax penalties.

Add in that even after Trump’s administration kills off the ACA, people with pre-existing conditions will still be allowed to get plans, there’s no reason not to go ahead and get insured. Hopefully, the first thing Trump’s people kill off is the odious coverage mandate.

I knew it was in there somewhere

The figures include about 250,000 new consumers and more than 750,000 current enrollees

Yes, and I assume Trump is well aware of that. And if he isn’t, he not as bright as I thought.

So we’re supposed to believe THIS government statement all of a sudden? Post the names so we can ask them if they really did this?

My daughter signed up for it in mid 2016, then took a job that offers insurance. The sole reason she signed up was that the cost for Obamacare was less than the penalty for not having it.

She’s single, young, healthy and had a pretty modest income.

But, had she ever needed anything from her insurance, she would have had to drop $6,000 out of pocket first, which of course she doesn’t have.

“according to the Department of Health & Human Services.”

Right, and unemployment is at 4.5%

How many are signing up because they lost their private coverage?

Exactly right. I’m one - my former employer dropped it’s retiree health insurance benefit the instant Obamacare became law, telling both present and future retireees that we could not get insurance much cheaper through the marketplace (which of course has never been true). So for the past 2 years I’ve put up with the horrid website and idiotic support from the “Marketplace”.

Despite the obscenely high cost, the website barely works and is terribly difficult to navigate and find what you’re looking for. Worst of all, communication between the insurance companies and Obamacare is virtually non-existent. For example, I recently became eligible for Medicare and went thru the usual routine of signing up for Medicate and buying a Medicare Supplement, etc. No problems.

Then I cancelled my Blue Cross policy through “the Marketplace” which was acknowledged etc. So far this week I’ve received three emails telling me that I should start enrollment in Obamacare for 2017 and that my application is awaiting me.

I fully expect next year at tax time to be further punished for turning 65.

I’m 59, retired, have two teens and can’t go without any coverage. Since inauguration isn’t until another two weeks after the deadline, I have to sign up again.
