Yea, we’ve seen it coming. Been blessed with warm for November weather lately. But it’s Chicago so we know what we are in for.
Mrs. L started her AR build. Has her girlie Fluer De Lis hand guard, match trigger, and charging handle heading out for a nice subtle purple Cerakote this week. She picked her custom barrel, lower, and upper out last week.
Why oh why did I let her shoot mine?

Several years ago while doing some humanitarian relief work in Burma, I came across an XM16E1 Experimental from the first batch sent to Vietnam around 1964. It was in the possession of an ethnic resistance fighter. It had been in use in a jungle war zone for almost 40 years.
I could not figure out a way to get it back to the US but it would be quite the collector’s item.
I bought one of these back on July 4th for $1,700 off of gunbroker.com
I took it home over thanksgiving and shot a mag’s worth of rounds through it. It was spot on using one of those cheap SigTac Mag 3 Mode Reticle scopes.
I like it! Though, definitely not cheap.

The Army and Marines thought the M-16 was some kind of Buck Rogers freak.
When it first came out they didn’t even have cleaning kits. The article discusses the powder problem.

Now might not be the time to bring out a $2400 AR since, in our area at least, there seems to be a glut of ARs. Our local Armslist is loaded with people trying to sell. Good prices too.

LOL...you're old enough to know the line about hoping in one hand and spitting in the other. The machines, people, and processes that created the work of art known as the Colt Python have left the building in CT, never to be seen again. The tribal knowledge no longer exists to re-create such perfection. Hope this info doesn't ruin your holiday spirit...

That was due to the ammunition the army specified fouling the chamber. The USAF used a different load. It also was lack of proper cleaning kits and instruction. The army troops were initially told the rifle was "self cleaning".
Another improvement to minimize carbon build up was chroming the chamber to minimize fouling.
I think I handled the same one you handled 5 years later.
The market is saturated with AR15s. The last thing it needs is a retro M16A1 IMO, especially a pricey one. I doubt this will be a huge money maker for Colt and I doubt that they will ever bring back the Python although I would probably buy a couple if they did. If retro is the direction they want to go, I would like to see a retro M1 Garand-maybe a magazine fed version.

Keep the heel of your right hand on the bolt handle until the clip has locked into the magazine. Remove your thumb, fingers, nose, tentacles from the action. THEN release the bolt, and nudge the back of the bolt handle with the heel of your right hand. Just to be sure.
