LAWRENCE, Mass. — A 15-year-old boy charged with killing a high school classmate whose headless body was found near a river said in a police report made public Monday that they had gone to smoke marijuana together and he had last seen the classmate alive.

Mathew Borges was held without bail after pleading not guilty at his brief arraignment in Lawrence District Court on a murder charge. Borges is being prosecuted as an adult, so court proceedings were open. His lawyer, Edward Hayden, did not argue for bail.

The body of 16-year-old Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino was found near the Merrimack River in Lawrence on Thursday by a woman walking her dog. Police recovered his head nearby.

Borges told police that he and Viloria-Paulino had gone to the river on Nov. 18 to smoke pot and later parted ways.

But the police report also said Borges told a witness that he had "done something bad" and that he had "stabbed a kid and cut his head off killing him." Borges was arrested Saturday.

The motive for the killing is unclear and remains under investigation, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said. Police recovered evidence at Borges' home, he said.

Both boys were sophomores at Lawrence High School.

Hayden, the defense lawyer, said Borges was a student in good standing with a part-time job. But he said he didn't know enough about the case to comment other than to say Borges is "holding up well as can be expected of someone facing this kind of charge."

Borges is being held at a youth detention facility and is due back in court Jan. 10.

Viloria-Paulino's family has been critical of police, saying they at first said he was just a runaway and took too long to launch an investigation. Police haven't responded to that.

This story has been corrected to show the suspect is 15, not 16, per new information from authorities.

I promise you that I would be more shocked than anyone here if I saw an INS van around Lawrence. Our wise and circumspect city council has recently voted to declare our home a sanctuary city, much to the consternation of the current mayor, Danny Rivera, a good man despite the D next to his name, especially when compared to the last mayor, Willy Lantigua, who tried to turn Lawrence into a Dominican nationalist city- state.

Oh wow. I had no idea. When I grew up in Mass.the population of Lawrence, Lowell etc.was Irish, German, Italian, Polish etc. I guess I wouldn’t recognize my home state.

I worked in Lowell and Lawrence in the 90’s. I’m glad that I left there in 2002.

I’ll bet you are.

I grew up on the Cape when it was a wonderful and simple place. The last time I went home was about ten years ago. I wanted to cry. I promised myself I wouldn’t go back.

I still love the cape, but I’ve never lived there.

“we didn’t have this when I was a kid. Maybe a fistfight out by the bike racks...”

But you probably lacked the glorious diversity that we have today./s

{The sad part is that there is no going back.)

I lived in Massachusetts thirty years ago. There were at least three boys that age who committed horrific murders just because they wanted to. Sadly this is not new.

Ironically, Lawrence is less diverse than it has been in over a hundred years. You can live and die here without ever having to speak a word of English.

I am only pointing out an inconsistency in the logic here.

I had thought and hoped that was the case, just checking to make sure my thought regarding your remark was correct.

Man, I bet the poor woman thought she’d wandered into a bad movie.

Cry me a river. He was dead before the police were notified. The outcome is the same. The cops have a protocol to wait for missing persons. So many are runaways.

Cry me a river?

Their son is dead, and you’re worried about protocol? You’re a heartless bastard.

The freedom to smoke drugs is the very foundation of American society. Smoking drugs never hurt anyone. They are a natural substance. Alcohol decapitates more people than weed does. Weed mellowed that guy out while he was holding the knife. We need to legalize weed and make sure those who cannot afford it can get some.

The cops didn't kill their kid. They should be directing their anger at the culture that led to this insane act. I give you American liberalism and head chopping Latin culture south of the Rio Grande. If I'm a heartless bastard, you are a dope. If we sent cops chasing after every missing kid that didn't come home by dinner, we'd have to triple the police force.

You must be almost as old as I am!

They don’t have chalk boards anymore!

They have giant high-def monitors, and white boards.

The problem with that scenario is that the perp was carrying a weapon capable of decapitating someone’s head. I’d say there was some premeditation there.

“Looks like both of them could have initiated that kind of thing. At least to me.”

Being a WWII baby and having no experience in that kind of thing I am at a loss to judge from the picture whether they might be homosexual or schizophrenic, sometimes I suspect the two are synonyms.
