LAWRENCE, Mass. — A 15-year-old boy charged with killing a high school classmate whose headless body was found near a river said in a police report made public Monday that they had gone to smoke marijuana together and he had last seen the classmate alive.

Mathew Borges was held without bail after pleading not guilty at his brief arraignment in Lawrence District Court on a murder charge. Borges is being prosecuted as an adult, so court proceedings were open. His lawyer, Edward Hayden, did not argue for bail.

The body of 16-year-old Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino was found near the Merrimack River in Lawrence on Thursday by a woman walking her dog. Police recovered his head nearby.

Borges told police that he and Viloria-Paulino had gone to the river on Nov. 18 to smoke pot and later parted ways.

But the police report also said Borges told a witness that he had "done something bad" and that he had "stabbed a kid and cut his head off killing him." Borges was arrested Saturday.

The motive for the killing is unclear and remains under investigation, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said. Police recovered evidence at Borges' home, he said.

Both boys were sophomores at Lawrence High School.

Hayden, the defense lawyer, said Borges was a student in good standing with a part-time job. But he said he didn't know enough about the case to comment other than to say Borges is "holding up well as can be expected of someone facing this kind of charge."

Borges is being held at a youth detention facility and is due back in court Jan. 10.

Viloria-Paulino's family has been critical of police, saying they at first said he was just a runaway and took too long to launch an investigation. Police haven't responded to that.

This story has been corrected to show the suspect is 15, not 16, per new information from authorities.

“I am only pointing out an inconsistency in the logic here.”

Inconsistency is not at all rare in the workings of the law!

The DOJ views crimes in several ways, btwwhat follows is not something i made up it’s a fact.

If an hispanic murders a white person the hispanic is referred to as a white person. If a black murders an hispanic the hispanic is viewed as a black person. If an hispanic murders a black the hispanic is considered white. If a white murders an hispanic the hispanic is concidered to be black. An hispanic kills another hispanic they are both concidered to be hispanix.

This is why when Trayvon was killed the press said the shooter was a white hispanic.

We need to legalize weed and make sure those who cannot afford it can get some.

Just Damn. I know there are many pro-dopers who FReep. And I consider many of them to be liberal. But you really are extreme!

You sound like the democrats who believe in a free college education for those who cannot afford it. Or those who want ObamaCare for those who cannot afford insurance. As a taxpayer, you really want to take money out of my pocket just so someone can get high on marijuana?

It's one thing to have a welfare system in place for food or housing. But welfare for dope?

Ethan, please forgive my previous snark. I reread your reply. I looked at your tagline. I’ve only had one cup of coffee this morning. And so I missed your obvious sarcasm.

Have a good day! I’m off for more coffee.....

Lawrence has many Dominicans living there. Many Dominicans enter the country illegally by travelling to Puerto Rico which is close by and then buying the identity of a Puerto Rica citizen therefore entering the United States under false pretenses. Both Puerto Ricans and Dominicans speak Spanish and they look alike so they can get away with the charade. Lawrence is about 80% Hispanic.

The lawyers’ statement kinda took my breath away!!! Yeah, he’s holding up well for facing this kind of charge and, oh yeah, committing this kind of crime. Dear God, what have we come to?

Google the kid’s name for photos of him and his victim. Looks as if they spent a whole lot of time trying to achieve a “look”—maybe the Colin Kaepernick look.

...

Young homos. Most likely the killer got a sexual thrill from the killing.

Are we all going to just assume that the found head belongs to the found body?
