That is also correct. My three children are Japanese born and raised. But because they have a father like me, they know their history and know it as “history”. We often watch WW II videos and nuclear test videos together and talk about aeronautics, fluid dynamics and physics, and related science. No false guilt or shame in my family. And when we get the metal detector out and look for war relics we are all equally jazzed when we find something cool.

An apology from Abe would have no legitimacy...morally speaking, he can not apologize for the acts of those who are long past, many of which met their fate at the end of a rope. The war is over...what’s done is done.

Even with an hour's notice, the Japanese would have delivered a devastating blow at Pearl Harbor. Our inexperienced pilots would be engaged in their first air combat against experienced Japanese pilots with better planes.
I remember pre-dawn alerts while I was in Germany. We were rarely out of the gate within two hours. Our motor poll was 10 miles off base, and about half of our battery lived off post.
If it was an Air Force alert, my Platoon Sergeant had to run our platoon, as I was the Army Liasion Officer in the Wing Command Post. For Army alerts, I headed straight to the motor pool.
I lived in Germany for 4+ years, and I never brought up WWII in my conversations with my neighbors. That was from ‘77-81, and most were glad we were there, as it was during the Cold War.
I don't think Shinzo Abe needs to verbally apologize. That seems impossible for a Jap anyway. What he needs to do is get down on his knees in public and silently watch as the surviving footage of Japanese doctors torturing and vivisecting civilians is presented to him. Then he can get back up and dust himself off.
