Electoral College, unloved but ever present, set to anoint Trump

Donald Trump's fiercest critics may be dreaming of a last-minute revolt, but the Electoral College, a peculiarly American institution, appears near-certain on Monday to select the 70-year-old real estate mogul as the 45th US president.

Its detractors -- and they are many -- have denounced an electoral system that flies in the face of the venerated "one man, one vote" principle, and which perversely encourages presidential candidates to campaign in only a few key states while ignoring whole swaths of the country.

But despite the torrent of criticism this method has faced for decades, no reform attempt has ever succeeded.

When American voters cast their ballots on November 8, they did not in fact directly elect the next occupant of the White House. Instead, they picked 538 "electors" charged with translating their wishes into reality.

Trump won a clear majority of those electors -- 306, with 270 needed for election -- despite dramatically losing the popular vote to his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

Unloved? By whom? Unloved by those who have no basic understanding of my beloved American representative government. A miracle, the founders gave us.

He will not be anointed, but instead confirmed as 45th President of the United States of America. Save you anoint yahoo for how you view your Democrat leaders.

Anoint - ceremonially confer divine or holy office upon (a priest or monarch) by smearing or rubbing with oil.

What a steaming pile of excrement.

“One man, one vote”???...the esteemed constitutional scholars at Yahoo have no idea that around half of the states originally appointed electors with their legislatures.

I think its a slow process...probably states have differing times, and some might take days to report results.

I am pretty sure that Clinton knew the rules going in. I don’t recall her complaining about the electoral college going in.

Her campaign’s clueless strategy reminds me of her clueless strategy as Sec. of State. If she was that damned clueless, she certainly shouldn’t be president.

Per CNN, Dem AGs are moving on to lawsuits to keep Trump tied up in courts for years to come.

They never go away. The move on to the next stage.

Perfect explanation. Thanks.

He has, however, "trumped" the joker Clinton card. That makes sense only if you're a bridge player.

It;s funny how the Democrats had no problem with the Electoral College prior to the election, when they thought Hillary would easily win the presidency.

The electoral college is remarkably easy to understand when you understand how this country was founded. The first 13 states were really more like 13 countries, with a single government entity above them to handle disputes between them and serve the common good, when necessary (military).

Seeing it that way, it is easy to see why the popular vote is not relevant for selecting the leader of the government over the 13 countries. Rather, each country casts its own vote, weighted to a degree regarding the population size of the state, while keeping the “equalizer” similar to the one created by all states having the same number of senators.

It is really surprisingly simple and easy to see how the founding fathers came up with the concept. Once one realizes that the number of electors matches the number of congressmen, it becomes even more clear.

This is a constitutional republic. In a way, choosing a president by the electoral college is almost like choosing him by a vote of all congressmen, except it allows people to choose congressmen of one party while choosing a presidential candidate from a different county.

It’s all about checks and balances.

And don’t be surprised, when one party goes off the deep end, that they become a minority party in every way. It’s what happened to the Democrats the last 8 years.

‘Unloved’ E.C. is another one of the many fake premises conjured out a leftist’s imagination like “White Privilege” and “Climate Change”.
