Not many options in that part of the world. Either you’ve a secular ruler or an Islamist one with all the trimmings, including Sharia law.

The West has closed their eyes to the atrocities committed by the so-called rebels for too long. It is time we stop pretending Assad is worse than these Islamic barbarians we have been helping.

Syrian rebel sounds so much better than ISIS, or ISIL, or whatever they want to refer to those maniacal Islamic lunatics as.... As bad as Syria is, they are a secular state... The last thing the middle east needs is another Islamic state. Islam must accept secularism and the conversion of Saudi Arabia would be a very good start. Trump should explain that token Kingdom’s are fine, but actual Kingdoms are finished. Saudi Arabia must accept free, fair elections and equal rights. If they don’t, no money, no assistance and if Iran invades, it’s their problem.

” the opposition’s increasingly outspoken islamism”

Really
Like ISIS and Al Qaeda started out as moderates
We took down Hitler because of the Nazi party’s “ increasingly outspoken antisemitism”?

This is what passes for journalism these days?

Christians, one of the largest religious minorities at about 10 percent of Syria's pre-war 23 million-strong population, have tried to stay on the sidelines of the conflict. However, the opposition's increasingly outspoken Islamism has kept many leaning toward Assad's government.

The choice Middle Eastern Christians have is between a dictator who will kill you if you oppose his regime but who will otherwise leave you alone to practice your religious beliefs versus "rebel" groups who will kill you for being a non-Muslim or even the wrong sort of Muslim. Is it really so difficult to understand why Syrian and Iraqi Christians support the former? Any alternative to these two options exists only in the propaganda of "nation builder" policymakers in the US who either don't understand the situation or, more likely, understand it perfectly and actually prefer the Islamists.
