There's a picture of his gun in the linked article. I'm not much into plastic guns and I don't recognize the weapon, but if it's one of those 13-15 round mags, with the proximity of the shooter to the passengers, it would seem to me that he wasn't a very good shot.

From my view this particular airport was selected so as to maximize the impact on the public and tourist.
FLL is only 2 miles from the busiest cruise port almost anywhere. 45,000 people get off and on those ships on the busiest days. So add that to the airport passenger numbers and you got an ISIS selected and directed target.
