What has gone wrong is that they believe they can divorce this from religion.

They have tried to replace religion with nationalism and it fails.

The only way you can counter a virulent and aggressive religious movement is with a religious counter-force. But at the moment France is proudly secular.

Your answer implies that the French must then return to their religion. I have been expecting this for some time. Indeed I expect this for much of ex-Catholic Europe.
