I am sorry, but this Oklahoma Choctaw will be an Indian until the day I die. Its honorable and people know who and what you are talking about.And on the Paiute Reservation near me, there are signs everywhere that say "Indian" and they all call themselves American Indians except when talking to Federal Government people, then it becomes "Native American."

Exactly. At pow-wows (again, a suspect word) around here, Indian vendors put up signs that say “N-D-N Tacos.” No one seems to take any offense. What’s important is the fry-bread that is used to make them! (And the salt pork.)
