Trump set to name high court pick as Democrats plan fight

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump was set to unveil his pick for a lifetime job on the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday as Democrats, still fuming over the Republican-led Senate's refusal to act on former President Barack Obama's nominee last year, girded for a fight.

Trump said on Monday he would reveal his choice to replace conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, who died in February 2016, at the White House at 8 p.m. on Tuesday (0100 GMT on Wednesday). The court is ideologically split with four conservative justices and four liberals, and Trump's pick is expected to restore its conservative majority.

Three conservative U.S. appeals court judges appointed to the bench by Republican former President George W. Bush were among those under close consideration.

They are: Neil Gorsuch, a judge on the Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals; Thomas Hardiman, who serves on the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals; and William Pryor, a judge on the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Under the Constitution, a president's Supreme Court nomination requires Senate confirmation.

Democrats remain enraged over Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's refusal last year to allow the Senate to consider Obama's nomination of appeals court Judge Merrick Garland for the vacant seat, an action with little precedent in U.S. history.

TOPICS: Constitution/Conservatism; Government; Politics/Elections
KEYWORDS: dems; scotus; trump
FOUR more years (and maybe 8) of 'Bipartisanship', so-called!!! McConnell better be up for the fight, OR STEP ASIDE and give leadership to someone like Cruz who has a spine and has no fear of taking on Schmuckie.

Whaaa? Both parties have always waited out election season confirmation hearings. What the hell - more fake news.

All this fake outrage and fake news will give R 60+ in the Senate in 2018. HA HA

Rope a Dope ensues. It will be interesting to see if the level of “rage” over the immigration EO subsides and transfers to the Supreme court nominee...or not. This is like the biggest psychiatric experiment in history as it is possible to document all the liberals losing their minds. Trump is smart and will shuck and jive from here on out to keep the mediots off balance. they’re already very unbalanced.

Is this article really referring to Kennedy as "conservative"?

You ever notice how "conservative" justices will sometimes break on major issues (Kennedy on gay marriage; Roberts on Obamacare), but the liberal justices are always 100% in lock step on everything?

Democrats don’t know who the pick is — but they do know that they will fight against the nomination.

Tells you everything you need to know about the divisiveness and who causes it.

“McConnell better be up for the fight, OR STEP ASIDE “

How is McConnell still majority leader?

“I would SO love him to pick Cruz.”

Trump doesn’t pick the GOP leaders in the House and Senate. They are elected by their own membership. McConnell apparently has the support of over 50% of the Republicans in the Senate. Apparently they are happy with his agenda and the way he conducts business.

Same with Ryan in the House.

He's a sitting Senator....and if you really look into his cases, he's not the magnificent winner he pretends to be.

Smart...yes...would he be a good judge....He has no history...

Not quite true. Merkley said he would support Garland. Good luck with that.

Smart and, IMO, would adhere to the constitution. That’s all I ask. Well, that and the ability to persuade the other judges.

That’s because Trump is smart enough not to tell any republicans who the nominee will be so they can’t leak it to their commie dem buddies. Previously the opposition research would be full bore by now.

McConnell needs to be replaced, but Cruz is known for having a personalty that rubs a lot of people the wrong way. It's ridiculous that we still have McConnell and Ryan in the leadership after the establishment was rejected in the election. The establishment is still way too powerful. We are going to lose everything we achieve if they are still there when Trump leaves office, just like we did after Reagan. We need a new strategy to replace them because we haven't had much success overall.

McConnell is where he is because Senate GOPers want a weak leader.

I guarantee that Chuckie Schumer has a statement all prepared, regardless of who is named. It's will be full of words and phrases that include "extreme," "out of touch," "unqualified," and "dead on arrival."

Schumer and the Democrats will form the narrative later as they attempt a character assassination and a derailment of the nominee.
