WASHINGTON (Reuters) - About 900 U.S. State Department officials signed an internal dissent memo protesting a travel ban by U.S. President Donald Trump on refugees and travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries, a source familiar with the document said on Tuesday, in a rebellion against the new president's policies.

A senior State Department official confirmed the memorandum had been submitted to acting Secretary of State Tom Shannon through the department's "dissent channel," a process in which officials can express unhappiness over policy (http://bit.ly/2jOYW0y).

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said on Monday he was aware of the memo but warned career diplomats that they should either "get with the program or they can go."

A draft of the dissent memo seen by Reuters argued that the executive order would sour relations with affected countries, inflame anti-American sentiment and hurt those who sought to visit the United Spates for humanitarian reasons.

It said the policy "runs counter to core American values of non-discrimination, fair play and extending a warm welcome to foreign visitors and immigrants.

Trump on Friday signed an executive order that temporarily bans refugees and people from seven Muslim-majority countries, sparking tumult at U.S. airports and protests in major American cities.

***the State Department is the one that has to be drained the most comprehensively from the top down***

I hope the Sec State uses John Bolton to help open the drain... No one knows the swamp stink holes better than Bolton. I had sort of thought Trump might appoint Bolton to the Sec State office - but Bolton is still useful.

The complaining state department employees should be polishing up their resumes. Two words: “You’re fired.”

Does State Department have a combat arm? such as their 9/11 Benghazi team?

I have no problem with a formal channel for subordinate employees to express dissent with a superior.

Each of these 900 people should now be officially asked, by their department head, whether they would have any problem following their boss's orders (the one with whose policy they dissent).

Anyone who answers "Yes" (they'd have a problem doing their job) should be immediately terminated (or given the option of resigning), and anyone who said "No" (they disagree but will do as they are directed) might be retained, subject, of course, to the pleasure of the President.

By the way, barring a formal labor contract which specifies otherwise, "serving at the pleasure" of one's boss should be standard practice throughout the country.

Essentially, any employer has the right to dismiss any employee for any lawful reason, or for no reason. (The semantic distinctions between those two cases should offer ample flexibility for any employer to have their rights fully protected).

Yes, the State Department DOES have a combat arm always at the ready, but it's not the Benghazi team....it's called the mainstream media team !

Yep, I'm still hoping that the President will find an important spot for both John Bolton and Sheriff Clarke of Milwaukee.

Of COURSE, you would do this with a strategy in place. Was I wrong to assume this would be a part of such a move?

The U.S. State Department has historically been way overly pro-Arab. So it’s no surprise that they would sign something like this. Time to boot this trash from their jobs and get in some fresh uncontaminated blood in there.

Okay, here is what I said:

A simplified version of the message regarding “extreme vetting”:

“It’s not a travel ban.

It’s a PAUSE of migration from 7 specific nations (originally selected by President OBAMA), and will last for a current total of 90 days (unless extended for any reason).

During this time period, selected people will be writing suggestions regarding what “extreme vetting” they believe will be necessary for us to use in order to protect the Citizens from TERRORISTS.

CAN WE PLEASE GET THIS RIGHT PEOPLE.”
