If you listen to the Democrats, they claim that President Donald Trump is out to wreck the U.S. government. But when leaders of the party begun by Thomas Jefferson talk about Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch, they worry that he will affirm the principles held by Jefferson and the other Founding Fathers.
This illustrates why President Trump's nomination of 49-year-old Neil Gorsuch is a judicial home run. Gorsuch is a fine successor to Antonin Scalia, who unexpectedly died a year ago. Gorsuch, like Scalia, believes that the Constitution actually means something, rather than being a meaningless collection of words to be tortured until they confess to the desired result.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer announced his opposition to Gorsuch, who was unanimously approved for the Circuit Court of Appeals a decade ago, without even assessing the judge's record. How the latter ruled simply didn't matter. Anyone other than a liberal activist bent on amending the Constitution via judicial decision was unacceptable.
Of course, the Democrats prefer not to admit that they want judges who act like legislators. So some Democrats instead are complaining that the Republicans "stole" the Court seat. How? By refusing to approve President Barack Obama's nominee last year.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell made the obvious point that there was an election upcoming. It made no sense to stage a nomination fight in the middle of a highly partisan political campaign. Rather, the American people should vote on whom they wanted making judicial appointments.
If the Democrats believed that voters stood by them, they would have made the nomination an election issue. However, President Obama gave up early and in effect dropped the appointment. His Senate allies barely mentioned the issue.

I don’t trust Gorsuch at all; he may look “good” on paper, but after what he said, this past week, even out of context or not, the bloom is off his rose.
MAJOR CORRECTION: The Republican Party did NOT start with Thomas Jefferson, it began With Abraham Lincoln. However I will give Jefferson credit for starting the ideology of the Libertarian Party which is fine with me.
Exactly
Actually you’re wrong too but look it up before you get mad
I’m not a huge Abe fan and my people know the flaws of the GOP all too well even if they are the only choice for now
I do however support Jefferson even though the line from him forwards may not be palatable to many
Trying to assume GOP always good and Dems always bad is foolish
And what about the whigs....
And so on
Trying to do direct comparisons is inaccurate
But Yankees just can’t seem to resist acting like history never alters political parties
“North good, south bad” thinking is behind elevating Lincoln, he did more harm than good under any honest assessment untainted by petty regional partisanship. We have him and the Civil War to thank for the modern, federalized leviathan state more than any other President, for one.
He said what any good judge would say. The three branches of government are separate entities.
He also said that any judge focused on the results of their decisions is not a good judge. IOW, he believes that judges should interpret the law (or Constitution) as it is written.
If he's so "intelligent", surly there was a different way he could have phrased that answer to what was probably a "GOTCHA" question.
And somebody please clue the Jeffersonians in to the fact that Jefferson was really the first DEM.
I agree, all I need do is look at past Republican picks that looked good on paper.
Are you concerned that Neil Gorsuch belongs to a far-left church?

All of the GOP rotten egg Justices LOOKED GREAT ON PAPER; the really great ones....well, lets just say that they didn't tick off ALL of the boxes.
I am concerned about Gorsuch’s comments re 9th Circuit .. and his apparent opinion that the COURTS have the ultimate authority.
NO THEY DON’T.
The Courts are only 1/3 of the rule; there are 3 distinct parts, Executive, Legislative and Judicial.
The Judicial was not created to usurp the power of the Executive; which is what the Judicial 9th Circuit is trying to do.
But, don’t worry. Already tonight, I saw legislation coming out of the Congress regarding breaking apart the ultra liberal 9th Circuit. But, since this court is seated in SF, you are going to have a hard time finding judges who are not liberal.
Then, I also see that the President has already stated he’s re-issuing his Order .. next week.
So, I guess we’ll see what happens when the President takes back his Constitutional authority from the Court.
And .. in the meantime, all those DemocRATS who believe they have scored a BIG one .. better consider what will happen to them if we get targeted by terrorists .. THE DEMOCRATS WILL BE OVER - OUT OF BUSINESS - FOREVER.
Leave it to us old timers to see things clearly!
And yes, President Trump is on the right track with this...now.
i’ll save you both the problem:
The first Republican Presidential candidate was John C. Fremont in 1856. He was later a Major General of Volunteers in the Civil War, and had some early success in the War.
As for the origins of the party itself, i am ignorant. i do know that Lincoln was originally a Whig. The Whigs in many ways (with some important differences) were a lot like Libertarians.
Jefferson is attributed as the founder of the Democratic Party, although he would rise in armed opposition to it today.
That’s true but you know freepers
Facts can be irritants
I sure hope he turns out to be a good one, if not we may be finished as a country.
Indeed
I have seen some of our most prolific south bashers on this very forum deride slave owner Jefferson who was in fact a founder as much as one could be one of the democrat party be called....
OVERRATED AND A THIRD RATE INTELLECT
Crazy
Gee thanks! I get it right every once in awhile .. just for the challenge.
Oh well, you know me, FACTS MATTER; so I keep posting them.
