American Champion Skips Chess Tournament Rather Than Wear Hijab (In Iran)

One American champion is voicing her opposition to “women’s oppression” by boycotting the women’s world chess championship in Iran rather than bow to Iranian demands that she wear a hijab, or headscarf.

“By participating, I would be forced to submit to forms of oppression designed specifically for women,” Nazí Paikidze insisted. “It sets the wrong example, particularly for young girls interested in chess.”

Paikidze, the current U.S. chess champion, could be competing for up to $100,000 in prize money. However, she has refused to attend the event.

“I will NOT wear a hijab and support women’s oppression,” she said. “Even if it means missing one of the most important competitions of my career.”

Pictures at the link including one of Sweden's shameful, if predictable, acquiescence to the Iranian demand.

Meh, just as well. If she won, they’d probably discover some rule preventing them from paying her the purse.

The Muslims in Iran say she HAS to wear it.

Just remember that next time some lefty claims that hijabs are not a sign of oppression.

A real American. If the Muzzies won’t wear yamikas or crucifixes, why should she have to wear a hijab?

Good for this lady. Takes a lot of courage.

Perhaps another alternative would be to wear one with a big cross on it.

I don’t remember Hillary wearing hijab during her many Middleeastern visits as SOS. What about Marie Harf and Stephanie Powers and some of the other women on Kerry’s staff?

I salute Ms. Paikidze for her stand and for placing principles above personal profit.

Bummer of a first name though.

Don't know about her time as SOS but as First Lady she and Chelsea both certainly did.

Why is the chess federation holding a championship in such a backward country as Iran ?

It might be interesting to get comments from NOW, Fauxcahontas, and Hillary on this.

They are always so oddly silent on the subject of clearly observable repression of womens' basic freedoms in islamic countries. Would not authentic womens' rights advocates loudly stand up for this brave young woman standing up for women?

I believe the game was invented in Persia, now known as Iran.

Paikidze, the current U.S. chess champion

I don't follow chess, so I found this confusing: The current US chess champion is a woman? Why have I not heard this glass-ceiling revolution? You would think it would be all over the supermarket tabloids, and every girl in public kindergarten would have been issued a pink chessboard within weeks. . .

Okay, I looked it up and Miss Paikidze is the US women's champion. Fabiano Caruana is the US champion. I guess as in boxing, tennis and football, certain biological distinctions between the sexes won't go away unless you abolish the game itself. Hillary's people were probably planning that.

Anyway, bully for her. (And no question she'd beat me in three moves.)

Pelosi did when she went to Syria. Not that it is the same, but some may conflate it to be. The wives of heads of state, when visiting the Pope, where a mantilla and black dress.

Though not an absolute rule, it is considered the “thing” to do.
