My liberal sister had two boys graduate from college in the last few years. They are both doing well for themselves so hopefully they are paying off their debts.

I recall when they were getting into college she said “They both got a little bit in scholarships, and with the Federal College Loans we didn’t have to pay all that much.” I’m not sure, but just the way she said it, it sounded like it was just free money to her.

WEll aren’t you nice,,,NOT, it’s the fault of the greedy professors and administrators and stupid sport programs that spend millions on athletics, NOT the fault of the students that are trying to learn something. When I went to law school no less, I ended up with 5K in student loans and paid the rest myself and the loans after I graduated. Now the kids end up with 100K in loans. It is criminal the way these huge moronic institutions take advantage of kids.

I’ve said for some time that the U.S. government would institute a college loan forgiveness program. The example you cited of the 40 year-old still paying off student loans explains why. The political pressure for this isn’t going to come from the people paying off the loans ... it’s going to come from all the industries who can’t sell big-ticket items like homes and cars to people who are burdened with enormous college debt.

“It is criminal the way these huge moronic institutions take advantage of kids.”

They are profiting from the system - but if think it is similar to the housing bubble. The government pushes easy loans at “low” rates so everybody can get a home/college education. And with our economy becoming more service industry instead of blue collar that pushed kids to college too. So lots of demand, the prices go up.

I’m guessing like most bubbles it will pop. I’m surprised it hasn’t already. I know many smart recent graduates that are motivated but they can’t find jobs.

there should be a mandatory four-hour seminar to explain what happens when you take on enormous loans (greater than $50,000).

Maybe another session to explain the importance of gaining skills that make you employable, as opposed to these feel good "studies" classes that they want to stick us with the tab for.

One thing I won't miss about the Obama years is feeling stupid for working and paying my bills.

Full agreement. If these little idiots actually learned a trade and worked using that trade through school, they wouldn’t have any debt at all and they would have stable employment as well. They wouldn’t be wasting time ‘finding themselves’ and rioting on campus.

They’re not kids; they are legal adults who choose to go to high priced universities thinking that a degree will entitle them to a job and fat salary. They are choosing to go this route despite the reality that they’ll be loaded with debt in a bad economy. They choose to take useless courses and get a useless degree.

Once upon time, college kids got jobs to pay for school.

Suck it up snowflakes.

The thieves running these colleges choose to offer pablum at hugely inflated prices under a scheme to profiteer off these kids and their parents. Wise up, dude.

They still choose this path; there are other ways if they would only be willing to get outside of their safe space and strike out on their own. Instead, they choose to go this route and choose not to learn a trade and save up.

I wanted my kids to go to college not trade school. Was that wrong? Maybe.

You want them to have a great education, but making a living should come first after high school; a year’s salary working as a plumber would more than pay off a year’s tuition.
