That’s a load of bull.
No way they should be paid that much. Create more jobs for other people too. No need for all the pensions. Most taxpayers don’t get such pensions.
As I remember from my Tea Party days about 8 years ago in Rockland County NY, we found out the ASSISTANT Chief of Police in Clarkstown was making over $300,000.00 yearly, about 100k more than NYC Police Chief, Ray Kelly. We had one of “official” Rockland’s spokesmen (actually an older woman) and she explained it wasn’t fair that we brought it up, that we weren’t taking into account all kinds of things, like “seniority”. We just shook our heads. They have their own language and their own universe, well-protected against ours.
That is insane! California firefighters also get unsustainable amounts of money in retirement.
I live in a rural fire district that covers 224 square miles. The entire annual budget is $112,000.
The manpower number is 22.
Did you know that 80% of the firefighters in the USA are volunteers?
Sounds like Moonbeam needs a raise
If ya like being looted, conned and lied to, you’ll love CA.
Same thing in San Jose.
You got guys making $300K- $400Kof that amount, they are comped $40k- $50k for their Healthcare and pension benefits.
When they retire they will receive 90% of their highest 3 years earned and averaged.
So, if you are making $350k before insurance and pension bene’s, you would take home $315,000 with guaranteed COLA @3%
in their 1st year they would automatically receive $10,500 increase and in year ten that COLA would deliver an increase of retirement to we’ll over $450,000.
Awesome...
How many hours are they working? If they are putting in 80 hour weeks, fighting serious fires, then maybe. They definitely go into time and a half and double time if they’re on a big firefight.
LOL
That earthquake can’t come soon enough.
A firefighter actually does things to help the community. Politicians are LEECHES, and should receive 2% of what firemen/police/EMT’s get.
Are they doing their jobs? Are they not being stupid?
I’ll be honest, “Firefighters” is the kind of jobs that I think no amount of money could compensate for. They work horrible hours, in nightmarish conditions, to protect the people around them. As long as these guys are doing their jobs, then they’ve earned every cent and then some.
I’ve always wondered about the pay and pensions for cops and firemen. The disability rates are staggering, and the overtime and pensions are ridiculous. The military puts in more hours under more danger and gets no overtime and a fraction of the pay.
Public sector unions—all of them—are evil. They have not only bankrupted the country, they have bankrupted the work that once made this country great.
I love how they say they’re on overtime, when really, they’re on call.
I’ve had jobs where I was “on call” 24/7 — didn’t get paid diddly for it.
Where are all the H1-B firefighters?
The article is somewhat misleading when you factor in retirement comes from this amount as well. They earned their pension. They unlike Moonbeam actually serve a useful purpose for the good of all.
Actually there are many places for years where craft level non management workers made more than their bosses by working lots of overtime. My dad did it. He was a 45 year Ma Bell employee whom retired as a service tech working outside on data circuits his last few years there. When I was growing up dad did a lot of 13 straight day stints working 8-12 hour days. He made more than his boss who has about as much seniority.
My last job I counted on overtime to nearly double my income to a liveable wage and a I was skilled Jack of all Trades maintenance mechanic and boiler operator. My last year and a half I put in a lot of it and it made a difference on my disability check. BTW I've been a fireman as well but not in civilian life. I was a One on One {Navy fire fighting term for #1 nozzleman on #1 hose}.
Sound like it’s not a pay issue, but a benefits issue...
I have no problem if a veteran firefighter is making a nice fat paycheck...it’s not like just any smo can walk in and do what they do...
Streamline the benefit packages to more private sector limits...
Of course at some point math will rue the day when the money runs out...
