New Orleans Can Remove Confederate Statues, Federal Appeals Court Says

Statues of Confederate leaders Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis are targeted for removal in New Orleans, after a federal appeals court approved the city's plan to change how it treats symbols of its history. Opponents of the move vow to keep fighting it in court.

When Mayor Mitch Landrieu called for the city to remove the statue of Lee back in 2015, he said, "There may have been a time when that monument reflected who we were as a city, but times change. And so do we," as member station WWNO reported. After an intense public debate, the city council voted to take the statues down and place them in a new area.

The plan sparked legal challenges; this week, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with a district court that had ruled the city could go ahead with the removal because the plaintiffs weren't likely to prevail. The court said plaintiffs in the case hadn't proven their argument that removing the statues would bring irreparable harm.

After an intense public debate, the city council voted to take the statues down and place them in a new area.

You notice with all these stories, the statues are just getting moved a few miles down the road, and the Democrats that make up these city councils are making the local taxpayers foot the bill for the exorbitant price tags ($400,000 for the one in Louisville, KY) of moving the statues? What difference does it make if this statue sits in this one spot in New Orleans vs. this other spot in New Orleans?

They can get rid of General Lee but they can’t get rid of Lee Circle.

Another waste of court time. Of course, the city has the Right to remove statues or monuments. However, leaving them in place gives you a chance to discuss treason and its implications.

Are there any statues of Sherman at LSU? He was head honcho there before the war. Or are only southern civil war statues covered?

“Why? Are those aholes on the court afraid of American history?”

I don’t think the court was concerned about history, they sided with the idea that the city had control of the monuments that were situated on property owned by the city.

Of course they can remove them — they are the elected representatives of the voters. Don’t like it, vote in new representatives.

If history and heritage don’t rile you up enough to vote in new management, how about the wasted money to move the statues?

Come on Mitch, three stupid statues? The surviving plantations, the French Quarter and the Civil War Museum should be bulldozed.

There are actual Confederate flags on display at the Civil War Museum. Can you believe that?

If you just erase history it is as if it never happened. And I look forward to any references to huricane Katrina because it is such an unfortunate event.

They can rename Lee Circle and install the figure of a progressive or Black hero in Lee’s place. In such a manner, the charm of New Orleans is impaired and the city’s tradition of accommodation between races is degraded. Jackson Square and the statute of Andrew Jackson are also on the target list, Jackson of course having been a slaveholder — even if the savior of the city from British conquest.
