WASHINGTON (AP) — The IRS strikes back: The tax agency reports that the number of identity theft victims plummeted last year after agents struggled for years to combat what has become a multibillion-dollar industry. The number of victims dropped by 46 percent, to 376,000, the IRS said. These taxpayers had their identities stolen by criminals who used their Social Security numbers and birthdates to obtain fraudulent tax refunds. The IRS stopped nearly 1 million fraudulent refunds from being issued last year. They totaled almost $6.6 billion, the agency said. “It’s a much more challenging time for the cybercrooks,” said Mark Ciaramitaro, vice president for retail tax products and services at H&R Block. “All of the easy paths have been closed.”

376K in numbers of identity tax thefts is not insignificant.

Every once in a while, I see where someone is prosecuted for multiple tax return filing or filing under others numbers but those numbers are reasonably small given the amount of money stolen. Perhaps the penalty needs be upped a bit. Say deliver the refunds with a flame thrower??

There's a kenyan who just moved in a couple of blocks down from The White House that is using a stolen Social Security Number. INVESTIGATE HIM IMMEDIATELY!

Much of the identity theft was from employees and contract hires from within the agency.

I really do wonder, especially considering the IRS’ propensity for criminal political activism, how many cases of identity theft were a result of internal IRS fraud?
