If You Think Canada Is a Welcoming Nation, Talk to a Displaced Mexican

Today, Canada is standing tall. Its citizens are patting themselves on the back, proud to hail from one of the bastions of liberalism, of tolerance, of acceptance, of compassion. While the United States is closing doors, Canada is opening them. While U.S. President Donald Trump is slouching toward authoritarianism, Canada is safeguarding democracy. Canadians have much to be proud of and much to teach the world about compassion. Except for that one troubling spot of not-so-benign neglect that is Canada’s relationship with Mexico. While Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaches out to embrace suffering Syrians, his government seems ready to throw embattled Mexicans under the bus just to appease Mr. Trump. Where Mexico is concerned, far-flung conflicts seem to matter more than a raging fire in the neighbourhood

This selective interest is not new, but has become more painful and more obvious. For the 22 years that the North American free-trade agreement has been in place, Mexico has never fully been viewed as a partner with equal standing.

At worst, it has been a footnote; at best, a tourist destination. Although more than 2,600 Canadian companies have offices and operations in Mexico, including major firms such as Bombardier, Goldcorp and Linamar, Mexico has never been part of Canadians’ mental map. It remained a distant, unknown, uninteresting place, rarely covered by the media, rarely part of the conversation. Mexico’s fitful efforts at democratization, its human-rights crisis, its U.S.-sponsored war against drugs that produced more than 150,000 deaths and more than 28,000 disappearances in the past decade left Canadians cold. During the years my twin sons spent at Upper Canada College, their Mexican-Canadian roots were not viewed as a true sign of North

But won't 'throw Syrians under the bus'?

The writer has no idea Trump is oppsed to ALL illegals, and especially Syrians?

The Globe and Mail is guilting a country leaving itself essentially defenseless against Islamist immigrants.

>Today, Canada is standing tall.

Meanwhile you, denise, are a sponge to those that work hard for a living. You and your lazy, filthy, pampered pinchoffs are a drain on society. You think we that earn our living owe you something.

Well denise, FO and Die.

Why would Baby Doc want to appease President Trump? I would think he’d try to embarrass him in any way he could, much like Putin did Obama.

I have had many Canadian neighbors traveling in expat communities in Mexico. I think half of Alberta is here during the winter.

Why would Putin want to embarrass Obama? Obama promised he would ave more flexibility to sell out the U.S. to Russia. Obama and Trump definitely agree on selling the U.S. out to the Russians. Obama to Russia: ‘After My Election I Have More Flexibility’

This is a white Spanish Mexican. They want all their uneducated brown indigenous Mestizos, the tribes conquered and robbed by the Spanish, to leave Mexico and be supported by the US taxpayers. That’s why she hates Pres. Trump and his wall. If Switzerland were our southern neighbor, there would be no need for a wall..

While U.S. President Donald Trump is slouching toward authoritarianism...

I have never really equated border protection with authoritarianism.

I guess this little dimwit is upset that if the US successfully seals the border against illegal "immigrants" then Mexico will have to actually work to solve the problems of its poorest citizens. Oh, the horror. Solving problems is hard. Throwing them at the US is easy.

When I first started reading this I thought it was sarcasm from a conservative columnist. Then I realized the author was serious.

Gee, won’t she be shocked... SHOCKED, I say! when she finds out that most Canadians didn’t want the Syrians either. It was yet another decision that the politicians made FOR us. X.x

“(Mexicans being tossed back) to appease Mr. Trump.”

Fantasy: Canada would love to have their own millions of broke, deadbeat Mexican and central American sneaks, felons and charges on the public treasury, with the narcotics, gang banging and human slave & sex trafficking that comes with them, but darn it—that Trump is bullying the Canucks into not welcoming them to the Great White North.

Reality: take as many as you want, hosers.

You’re right; Mexico’s “Creoles” (Mexicans of European origin) regard the Aztecs in the same way England viewed the Irish - simply an obstacle to raising livestock.
