Here at Ars, we're always on the lookout for wacky, tech-focused legislation. And we've found one bill that is certain to make our Top 10 list.

The new proposal bars the online publication of a "false or deceptive statement designed to influence the vote." Bye-bye online news. On the flip side, this legislation would probably outlaw lawmakers' and candidates' online speech, too.

If this law passes it will be declared unconstitutional in one minute. Shame of Mr. Chau for even proposing it.

“false or deceptive statement designed to influence the vote.”

Does it apply retroactively? They could arrest Walter Cronkite for his “reporting” on the Tet offensive.

You cannot ban fake news’ you can just enforce penalties against those who make it up.

I would say just strengthen current libel and slander laws to include “fake news” that harms you, including harm in the internet.

Don't bet on it.
It should be declared unConstitutional, but I wouldn't depend on the courts.
If’n it were up to me, I'd remove ‘intent’ as a condition for slander or libel. Just have show false information disseminated and demonstrate actual damage to get a judgment.

Fake news vs lies so I guess lies are okay but then fake news won’t be.
