Students help revamp Orange County school lunch menu

Lunch menus at schools across Orange County will soon be revamped, and those changes will be based on choices by the district’s toughest critics—students.

Students at Dream Elementary School in Apopka casts their votes via iPads during a tasting Thursday.

The process showed the important need to continue free or reduced meal programs.

The goal of the taste test was to get all of the students on the same page when it comes to what they eat for breakfast and lunch at school.

“We don’t want the food to end up in the trash can, so we do our homework ahead,” said Lora Gilbert, senior director of Orange County Public Schools’ Food and Nutrition Program.

Nutrition, along with federal dollars, plays a big role in what students end up eating.

In Orange County schools, it takes $1.05 per day to feed on student lunch.

For breakfast, it’s 95 cents.

And it takes about $77 million from the USDA to make it happen.

I know that the US Army takes this very seriously. Enlisted personnel are as somber and focused as they get. The mess halls are as quiet as libraries during the survey. Officers are encouraged to butt out.

Typically the number one thing is the made to order omelet for breakfast. That and coffee and many of them would be good for the rest of the day.

From the article:Okay. And this "important need" is expressed how?

More from the article:

Pardon me, but what does this comment have to do with students voting for their fav foods? I guess the second part of Dr. Jenkins' quote are for those living in Rio Linda?

So, these little kids are so POOR that they need FREE Breakfast and Lunch at school...but they are voting on this WITH THEIR iPads?

(Or maybe these are provided by the schools? Meh.)

I do commend the school on being pro-active. I HATE all of the WASTE this stupid Mooch Initiative had led to!

I wonder what the total tonnage was in wasted food, nation-wide, during her 8 year reign of Food Nazi Terror!

Cook one item with some pork fat added and another item with twice as much salt as all the other entrees and you’d have the top two vote getters.

Soldiers have a say in what’s fed to them now? Wow! Then again I was in the NAVY. The food was excellent!

$1.05 for a school lunch. We were discussing the other day ( http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3536553/posts?page=31 ) that some Meals on Wheels lunches cost up to a ridiculous $16.

Not only that but these poor kids with their iPads also need an afternoon snack and free lunches in the summer up until they’re 21.

Some days I wonder how I did it! We provided clothing and shelter for our three boys AND managed to FEED THEM three meals a day for 18+ years, each!

That’s close to 60,000 meals for the three of them, not counting we adults!

You know what? If you can’t afford to feed your own kids - DON’T HAVE KIDS!

(But, also - don’t abort, LOL! Give those kids to someone that HAS the means to care for them, versus letting Mother Government raise them!)

In the 1990s plus, ours only knew garage sale toys and clothes. $25/year could fill a closet with brand new outfits with the tags still on and they were the best dressed kids at school. That savings paid for 4 years of college and not a dime owed at graduation.

Stupid us. Today’s kids get their college paid for with someone else’s money - “Ha, you want me to pay back my loan?!?!?” You get one guess who daughter’s first dorm mate was. Yep, an illegal with a full ride. Talk about a slap in the face. I’ll never get over that.

I used to find posh clothing for my boys at Goodwill or St. Vincent’s, too. They were always decked out in the best for cheap!

I used to tease them when they’d come down for breakfast:

“When is your check coming from Tommy Hilfiger? I mean, you’re ADVERTISING for him...for FREE!” ;)
