Samsung Galaxy S8's Facial Unlocking Feature Can Be Fooled With A Photo
Hacker News ^ | March 31, 2017

It is unclear, at this moment, as to how precise the photo used in the demonstration should be compared to the real face? Or at what distance the phone was held from the camera? Or what angle they chose during the registration of the recognition?

But what's clear is the fact that a gap remains in the security system of the Samsung's new facial recognition feature.

Moreover, there are reports that Samsung’s Galaxy S8 would include a facial recognition feature for mobile payments in the coming months.

Lol. I wouldn't trust it to work reliably. Too many variables.

It works only if the photo is photo realistic.

As I recall, the Niagara Falls Casino experimented with dispensing money with facial recognition.
First the crooks successfully used a photo go the Kiosk vendor instituted liveness by looking for eye blink, but the crooks caught on and cut out the eyes on the photo and hused their own eyes to show blinking. After that, the kiosk was removed and they went back to human-on-human transactions.

Lol. Exactly.

I enabled the finger recognition on my smart phone once. It only worked about 30% of the time.

A problem — the camera has to be good enough to not introduce artifacts and what happens if a person changes their expression, a woman her makeup, etc.

I have read that by giving the peace symbol, you can give away your fingerprints to hackers.

The ‘stupid generation’ strikes again.

I work at a university and I am DAILY astounded at the mindless stupidity, lack of forethought, forgetfulness, refusal plan or to think past their noses, complete inability to successfully accomplish simple, everyday tasks, failure to learn from ANY mistake, etc. that these GRAD STUDENTS display.

To enroll, un enroll, when problems arise about classes, academic issues or anything... these students have their parents call here to take care of things. BELIEVE ME it’s true.

On an almost hourly basis, they lose or forget their keys, wallet, id cards, books, phones.... I have a drawer full of this stuff EVERY DAY. One girl lost her car keys three times in the same month.

#9 One girl lost her car keys three times in the same month.

Did she ever find her car?

I’d think that a simple fix would be to require a simple pixel movement change (body position change) over just a few frames - something not the equivalent of just shifting a picture to get shift

Who knows!! Right now, I have had a set of CAR KEYS in my desk drawer for over a month.

I put up a sign and everything... they’re still here!

Simple fix, they just need to pass a law stating that all photographs must have a watermark saying "This is a Photograph, not a Real Human".

Psst!
The fingerprint and facial recognition apps aren't about security. They're about constructing a database for the Deep State.

I wonder if it could be tricked by aiming the camera at a facial picture on the screen of an iPhone?

But it is a three dimensional problem. Lighting conditions and shadowing affect it too.

Also, less is more — trying to recognize the whole face is a problem. Maybe just the eye area or the mouth. Maybe not the mouth because of facial hair on mens faces.

A retinal scan is very precise and very repeatable. It is conceivable that the retina could be read from a distance and under the correct lighting conditions. Doubt that a cell phone might be able to do that — it would require a high res camera and a “flash” of the right spectrum of light (outside the visible range?) to light the retina.

I remind you that even with some kind of retinal scan, there is some sort of picturized (for want of a better word) version of the eye. Lighting, see through, et al? Is there not? My thought was imperceptible movement that couldn’t be duplicated by just shifting a picture.

Work or not, it was just a thought.

Well, at least they won’t have to cut off your finger or wrestle with you to get your finger on it. They just point it at you.

I wonder if the government could do the same. They may or may not be able to force you to put your password in or physically put your digit on it, but...if they just point it at you to unlock it even if you don’t want to?

As for thugs, they can just take it, knock you on the head, and then point it at you or put your finger on it.

Eh.

I went to an NFL football game recently, and a friend sent me a link of a photo of the entire stadium. You can zoom right in on your seat and see yourself. And this is a commercial website.

Does anyone think they cannot do facial recognition? Because looking at my face in that photo...there was a LOT of feature visiblity. Let’s put it this way, there was enough capability in a picture archiving system on my computer that when I imported it, it knew exactly who I was, and who the other people in the picture with me were.

Just like license plate recognition. They just put those cameras at the intersections with links back to a database that does OCR on every single car that passes, stores the plate number, and identifier for the location of the camera with a date and time stamp. That is three distinct data elements that take up so little space, that they could probably store events for years or decades without worrying about running out of space, storage is now so vast and cheap.

And when the government at the local/state/federal level says “Run a report on this plate and tell me where this car has been seen for the last ten years” does anyone think they can’t do that?

They absolutely 100% can.
