Jack D. Young, the pickup driver accused of causing Wednesday’s highway crash in Uvalde County that killed 13 congregants of a New Braunfels church, said he had been texting behind the wheel, a witness said today.
“He said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I was texting on my phone,’” said Jody Kuchler, a welder from Leakey, saying he spoke to Young, 20, while he was still pinned in his wrecked truck after the collision.
“I told him. ‘Son do you know what you just did?’ He just kept saying, ‘I’m sorry. I’m sorry,’” recalled Kuchler, 55.
He said Friday that he repeatedly called authorities to report the white Dodge pickup driven by Young was drifting onto the road’s shoulder and across its center line, and warning that he feared a head-on crash.

While Texting.

Kuchler said he tried to comfort the few senior citizens in the church bus who showed signs of life. But it was clear, he said, that most of them had been killed.
Nobody that was alive in there was making any noise. They just looked at me and I said, Hang on, help is on the way. Kuchler said. None of them said a word. They werent crying. They werent complaining. They were just sitting there looking at me.
80 mph = 80 years.
I had my money on drugs, alcohol or fatigue. I forgot about just plain stupid.
The penalties for texting must be so severe that no one would consider doing it.
Murder. Life in prison. No parole.
Murder. Life in prison. No parole.
Texting practically is as dangerous as DWI nowadays; and is probably more likely to happen at any time. At least, DWI one knows often happens late at night, holidays and things like that, not to take that for granted.
No parole.
Drivers who Text are the new domestic terrorists.
I had my money on cell phone or alcohol.
Cell phone use while driving needs to be a DUI case. Every single day, I see people driving 80 on I-295 here with a cell phone in their hand while they look at it. Some people drive just fine that way. Some drunks can drive fine too.
I’m a municipal court judge. My money was on texting from the git-go. What a needless waste of 14 lives.
Chop off 10 fingers, at the wrists, both big toes plus one other. This is just a beginning.
Our laws now do not work.
There is a push to punish texting with the same severity as DWI, and I’m OK with that. They are different examples of stupid, reckless behavior, but the outcome is the same. If we haven’t gotten there yet, we’ll soon be at a point where DWT kills more people than DWI.
Time for immediate implementation in ALL vehicles to disable all phone functions when the motor starts. If you want to use your cell phone pull off the road.
OMG how horrible that had to have been. The comforting thing is they may have been so calm is because they were so close to the Lord.
Using a phone while driving costs the driver $500 in fines.
That won't bring back the victims
I think so too.....they knew eternity was near.....and they were ready.
